Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa King.
Lisa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey with Brownie Points began in a way I never could have planned. I was an elementary school teacher in Cleveland, Ohio, and baking brownies was simply something I loved to do. What started as a hobby in my family’s kitchen quickly grew into something much bigger. Before I knew it, I had gone from teacher to entrepreneur, filling orders from home and eventually building Brownie Points into a nationally recognized brownie company.
As the business grew, so did life around it. My family relocated to Columbus, and for a period of time I commuted two hours each way trying to keep the company going. Eventually, I reached a point where I had to make an incredibly difficult decision and sell the business. Deep down, though, I always believed Brownie Points would somehow find its way back to me.
And it did.
Several years later, during one of the most challenging chapters of my life, I was going through a divorce and becoming a single mother. I knew I needed to create stability for my family, and I also knew I still believed deeply in Brownie Points. I invested my entire savings and, with the support of my incredible family, friends, and my sister-in-law and business partner Lisa, we started the company again from scratch.
There were no guarantees. There were plenty of moments when taking that leap felt terrifying, but I have always believed that some of the most meaningful things in life require both faith and courage.
Over time, that leap of faith grew into something extraordinary. We opened our own manufacturing facilities, expanded into corporate gifting, online sales, custom gifting programs and retail, and watched Brownie Points reach customers throughout the country and internationally. Our products have been featured on Good Morning America, The Food Network, Rachael Ray, The Today Show, Fox News and even at events such as the Billboard Music Awards and the Grammys.
But when I look back, what I am most proud of is not simply how much the company has grown. It is what the journey taught me.
I learned that success is rarely a straight line. Sometimes you have to let go. Sometimes you have to start over. And sometimes the very chapter that feels like an ending becomes the beginning of something better than you imagined.
Buying Brownie Points back gave me more than a business. It gave me independence, perspective and the opportunity to show my children that you can rebuild, reinvent yourself and pursue something you believe in at any stage of life.
Today, I feel incredibly grateful for every challenge, every risk and every person who has been part of the journey. I still believe in fate, but I also believe we play a powerful role in creating our own destiny. My story is really about having the courage to begin again — and trusting that sometimes the biggest setbacks can lead you exactly where you are meant to be.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
NO! Absolutely not — and I would never want anyone to believe otherwise!
Business is a roller coaster, and you have to be willing to stomach both the highs and the lows. There are incredible moments when everything seems to be working, and there are other moments when you question every decision you’ve made. The challenge is learning not to get too comfortable during the highs and not to lose yourself during the lows. You must remain optimistic because when you lose your optimism you lose your business.
My journey has included starting a business from my kitchen, growing it, selling it when life circumstances forced me to make a difficult decision, and then finding the courage to buy it back and start over again during one of the most challenging periods of my personal life. I invested my savings, rebuilt the company, and had to trust that hard work, resilience, and belief in what we were creating would carry us forward.
There have been countless challenges along the way — growing pains, financial pressures, rising costs, difficult decisions, unexpected setbacks, and the constant responsibility that comes with knowing other people and their families are depending on the business as well. Entrepreneurship can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be lonely and humbling.
What I’ve learned is that the struggles are often where the greatest growth happens. They force you to become more resourceful, more resilient, and more willing to adapt. You learn that success isn’t about avoiding failure or difficult seasons; it’s about how you respond to them.
I truly believe that if you are going to be an entrepreneur, you have to fall in love with the journey, not just the destination. You have to keep showing up, keep learning, keep pivoting, and most importantly, keep believing — even on the days when the road ahead isn’t completely clear.
The roller coaster never really stops. You just become much better at riding it!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about BrowniePointsinc.com?
Anyone can make brownies. We choose to make extraordinary ones.
Brownie Points is more than a brownie company — we create memorable gifting experiences designed to surprise, delight, and make people feel genuinely appreciated.
We’ve taken one of America’s most beloved desserts and reinvented it for today’s tastes with unexpected flavors, premium presentation, and the finest, freshest REAL ingredients. We don’t follow the trends — we create them! Brownies are the NEW Cookie!
I have always believed that if your gift isn’t getting noticed, it isn’t doing its job. From personal celebrations to corporate gifting, we want every Brownie Points gift to make someone stop, smile, remember who sent it, and feel truly valued. We obsess over every detail so the experience is remembered long after the last brownie is gone.
What I am most proud of is that we have never lost sight of what we are really delivering. Yes, we make brownies — but we are ultimately delivering appreciation, connection, and joy.
That is especially important in business, where customers, employees, partners, and relationships are the people behind a company’s success. We want Brownie Points to be the go-to gift when companies want to say, “We appreciate you. You matter to us. Thank you for being part of our success.”
Our vision is simple: to become the brand name of brownies and the first name people think of when they want to send something special, memorable, and delicious.
Because a great gift shouldn’t simply check a box. It should create a moment — and it should be remembered and it should earn you endless Brownie Points!
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about Columbus is the people and the sense of community. It has the warmth and accessibility of a smaller city, but the energy, opportunity, growth and creativity of a much larger one. Columbus is incredibly supportive of entrepreneurs and local businesses, and I’ve always appreciated the genuine spirit of collaboration here — people want to see each other succeed.
It has also been an amazing place to grow Brownie Points, build relationships, raise a family, and be part of a community that continues to evolve and reinvent itself. There is so much happening here — incredible businesses, restaurants, neighborhoods, arts, sports (OSU Buckeyes) My alum, and innovation — yet Columbus still manages to feel welcoming and grounded.
Columbus is still one of the country’s best-kept secrets! Sometimes I wish more people outside of Ohio truly understood everything this city has to offer. But perhaps that is also part of its charm.
I’m proud to call Columbus home, and I’m even more proud that Brownie Points has been able to grow here and represent a little piece of Columbus as our gifts travel to people across the country and the world.
