Life & Work with Devon Carter of Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devon Carter.

Hi Devon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a top 50 shooting guard in the country, Devon Carter earned a scholarship to Lehigh University, where he ended up being a two time team captain on two championship contending teams. While at Lehigh, Devon earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology (‘16), a Master’s of Science in Social Psychology (‘18) and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Special Education (‘22). Upon graduation, Dr. Carter was selected as a Forbes 30 Under 30 Lister and began his academic career as an Assistant Professor on the tenure track at the University of Akron. After 3 years at Akron, Dr. Carter is currently a Professor at The Ohio State University.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
After an ACL injury as a freshman on the basketball team at Lehigh, Devon had to reprioritize his life and make his education top priority. This injury allowed him to see the importance of education and ultimately became his motivation behind his research at Ohio State, which is a mentorship program where college students facilitate workshops to high school students across the country about the importance of education and the opportunities that come with prioritizing education.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a Professor at The Ohio State University, Devon Carter’s research implements mentorship as a way to connect with high school students to help them understand the importance of education. The mentorship program is called Recognize Education And Learning (REAL). This research is implemented in 20 cities across the country and is introduced to high school students through Dr. Carter’s music, which can be found on Spotify and Apple Music.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Devon Carter has released multiple EPs that illustrate the importance of education and can be found on Spotify and Apple Music under the name, “Dr. Devon Carter”.

Dr. Carter has also been in TV shows and movies, including Hustle and Stranger Things on Netflix.
