Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Williams.
Corey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started as a professional drag artist in 2000 as a dare by a friend, while I was in undergrad at The Ohio State University. I have been blessed to have held a series of titles including my current title as Miss Gay Ohio 2026. I created the character of Anisa Love to be the superhero that Corey needed when he was younger. Now, I work with different organizations from The Kaleidoscope Youth Center, Equality Ohio, Stonewall Columbus, Trans Ohio, to CLGSA and HRC.
I feel that if you can help, you should help and be authentically yourself in the process
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been an easy path. Being a professional, working creative comes with its own unique set of barriers. A lot of which are personal mental challenges, but maneuvering in the arts within this current political climate has been rough. Funding for different programs have been cut. Having my art misunderstood by a certain part of the community has been a hurdle, but I stand firm in creating unapologetically black, queer art.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As Miss Gay Ohio 2026, I spend my time giving back to the community and engaging the state as a whole to find space for LGBTQIA+ representation.
What matters most to you? Why?
Making sure that everyone within our vast community is represented authentically. I never want anyone to feel left alone or unseen.
