Rising Stars: Meet Santos (DJ Jumpoff Javi) Villa of Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Santos (DJ Jumpoff Javi) Villa.

Hi DJ Jumpoff Javi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey as a DJ started when I was 15 years old in Rockford, Illinois. I’ve always loved music and the way the right song can completely change the energy in a room. What began as a passion eventually grew into something much bigger.

As I continued developing my skills, I earned opportunities to DJ on the radio at Power 106 in Rockford and later on Party 103.3 after moving to Toledo. Throughout my career, I’ve performed at events connected to artists such as Snoop Dogg, Miguel, Travis Porter, K Camp, Boosie, G Herbo and Bubba Sparxxx. I’ve also been part of major events including SXSW and the Core DJ Retreat in Miami. Those experiences taught me how to perform for different audiences, adapt to different environments and create memorable moments through music.

Moving to Toledo meant rebuilding my name in a city where I didn’t have an established network. I had to introduce myself to new venues, build relationships and prove what I could do one event at a time. The journey hasn’t always been easy. I balanced DJing with working a full-time job and providing for my family. I reached a point where I had to decide whether to play it safe or truly believe in what I had spent years building.

I decided to take my DJ career more seriously. Since then, I’ve built relationships with venues throughout the Toledo area, developed recurring events and created experiences centered around R&B, hip-hop and open-format music. I’ve also started developing my own event concepts instead of only waiting for someone else to book me.

One of my proudest recent accomplishments is becoming the official game-day DJ for Bowling Green State University football. That opportunity represents how far I’ve come since arriving in this area without many connections. Today, I’m continuing to grow the Jumpoff Javi brand, create original events and establish myself as more than someone who simply plays music. My goal is to create experiences that bring people together and leave them with a moment they’ll remember.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges was moving from Rockford Illinois to Toledo and having to rebuild my name from the ground up. In Rockford, I had already built relationships, worked in radio and established myself as a DJ. In Toledo, I didn’t have the same network or reputation, so I had to prove myself again one venue, one relationship and one crowd at a time.

I also spent years balancing DJing with working full time and taking care of my family. That often meant working long shifts and then DJing late at night, with very little time to rest or focus on growing my brand. After unexpectedly losing my full time job, I went through a difficult period financially, mentally and personally. I had to figure out who I was without the security of the job I had depended on for years.

There have also been times when I felt overlooked or undervalued, even with my experience. Building a career in a new city requires patience, especially when you don’t have a large local network opening doors for you. I’ve had events with small turnouts, ideas that didn’t work the first time and moments when I questioned whether I should continue.

However, those struggles forced me to become more intentional. I learned how to promote myself, build genuine relationships, create my own opportunities and keep going even when the results weren’t immediate. Music has always been the place where I feel most like myself, and every setback has helped me become more focused, resourceful and confident in the value I bring.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an open-format DJ and event creator performing under the name Jumpoff Javi. I specialize in reading a crowd and bringing different types of people together through music. My sets can move naturally between R&B, hip hop, house, throwbacks, Latin music, club edits and current hits depending on the room.

What I’m best known for is creating moments that make the crowd feel involved. I’m not only playing songs from a prepared playlist, I’m watching how people respond, adjusting in real time and knowing when to raise the energy, change direction or let the crowd sing an entire record together. My radio background also helped me develop strong timing, clean transitions and the ability to connect with an audience beyond the music itself.

I’ve worked in many different environments, including nightclubs, bars, community events, college campuses, festivals, corporate events and major artist shows. That range has taught me how to connect with different ages and backgrounds without losing my own identity. Whether I’m playing for an R&B crowd, a packed downtown bar or thousands of football fans, my goal is always to understand the assignment while still giving people an experience that feels like Jumpoff Javi.

I’m especially proud of becoming the official game-day DJ for Bowling Green State University football. I’m also proud that I’ve continued creating opportunities for myself in Toledo by developing my own event concepts, including R&B-centered experiences, instead of relying only on traditional bookings.

What sets me apart is my versatility, experience and ability to read people. I don’t believe DJing is simply about playing popular songs. It’s about understanding timing, emotion and energy. The same song can create a completely different reaction depending on when and how it’s played. Knowing how to create those moments is the skill I’ve spent more than 20 years developing.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like most about Toledo is its sense of community and its potential. It’s a city where relationships matter, and once people connect with what you’re doing, they genuinely support it. I’ve experienced that through the venues, crowds and local businesses that have welcomed me and allowed me to grow. I also love the waterfront, the downtown atmosphere and the variety of people here. Toledo has the ingredients to create some truly special entertainment experiences.

What I like least is that the city’s different scenes can sometimes feel separated. There are talented DJs, artists, promoters, venues and business owners doing great things, but everyone doesn’t always work together. I would love to see more collaboration and more opportunities for new ideas to receive support. Toledo has a lot of untapped creative potential, and I believe the city’s entertainment scene could become even stronger if more people connected across different crowds, neighborhoods and genres.
