Today we’d like to introduce you to Joely Kaylor-McCallister.

Hi Joely, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey in the beauty industry started with a deep passion for skin health, science, and helping people feel confident in their own skin. Over eight years ago, I turned that passion into a career by earning my esthetics license. Driven by a desire to push the boundaries of standard skincare, I went on to earn my NCEA (National Coalition of Estheticians Associations) Certification to solidify my foundation in advanced esthetic standards, client care, and clinical knowledge.

As my years in the treatment room grew, I found myself naturally gravitating toward the science behind formulations, skin histology, and advanced techniques. I loved empowering clients with knowledge, and that passion naturally expanded into mentorship. Wanting to help future professionals build their confidence and refine their skills, I transitioned into teaching as an educator at Aveda Institute Columbus. Guiding aspiring estheticians through foundational and advanced skin concepts confirmed that education was my true calling in this industry.

Over three years ago, I stepped into my current role as Education Manager at Boss Gal Beauty Bar, where I get to combine hands-on expertise with curriculum design every single day. I found a home where high-level skin education and provider support are truly prioritized. My passion for mentorship had found its perfect fit.

In my role, I lead curriculum development, design specialized training programs, coach our talented team of providers, and collaborate with leading skincare brands like ZO Skin Health, SkinCeuticals, Skinbetter Science, and Hydrafacial to ensure our team stays at the forefront of the industry. Beyond the treatment room and training floor, I also share that passion for skincare education with the broader community as a published author for Dermascope Magazine and through a podcast with my co-host, Morgan, called The Skinstructors.

Looking back, the journey from hands on esthetician to classroom instructor, and now Education Manager at Boss Gal, has been incredibly rewarding. I am proud to help shape the next generation of skin experts every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but every challenge along the way shaped me into the professional and educator I am today.

In January 2020, I took a leap of faith and opened my own business, renting a suite at a salon in Columbiana, Ohio. Just two months later, the pandemic hit, forcing me to shut my doors for nearly three months. Reopening was tough. People were understandably cautious, and when finances are tight, luxury services like facials are often the first thing cut from personal budgets. Building a consistent clientele in that environment required resilience and patience, but I kept pushing through and ultimately built a wonderful, loyal client base before deciding to relocate to Columbus.

Transitioning into teaching as an educator at Aveda Institute Columbus brought its own set of hurdles. Stepping into the classroom tested my ability to adapt, communicate complex concepts, and lead a diverse group of aspiring professionals. While it was demanding, it was equally rewarding. Navigating those challenges taught me invaluable lessons about leadership, patience, and curriculum delivery, and I truly wouldn’t be in my current role as Education Manager at Boss Gal Beauty Bar today without that transformative experience.

Boss Gal Beauty Bar is a premier modern medspa and self-care studio based in Central Ohio, known for blending results-driven skin treatments with an approachable, empowering vibe. Founded by Kathy Keeney, Boss Gal specializes in advanced aesthetic and medical treatments, including custom facials, HydraFacials, chemical peels, microneedling, cosmetic injectables, laser facials, and permanent makeup.

As Education Manager at Boss Gal Beauty Bar, I lead our team’s clinical training, design specialized curriculum, train all of our estheticians, and coach our providers monthly on advanced treatment techniques and metric goals. I specialize in high-level skin education, medical-grade formulations, and bridging the gap between hands-on treatment and deep science. I am best known for translating complex skincare concepts into accessible, practical knowledge for both providers and clients.

What I am most proud of is building structured, empowering training programs that give estheticians the confidence and skill to deliver exceptional, results-driven care. What sets me apart is my background combining business ownership, classroom instruction at Aveda Institute, and advanced NCEA certification with high-volume clinical practice. Having walked in every role, from full-time esthetician to classroom educator to corporate manager, I bring a well-rounded, empathetic, and highly strategic perspective to beauty education.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5 to 10 years, I see the esthetics and medical spa industry shifting rapidly toward deeper scientific validation, personalized technology, and elevated educational standards. Consumers are far more educated today than ever before, moving away from superficial beauty trends in favor of long-term skin health, preventive treatments, and evidence-based results.

The focus is noticeably shifting from reactive correction to proactive skin health, with skin longevity and regenerative modalities becoming central to everyday treatments. As these advanced technologies and medical-grade devices become standard, the demand for comprehensive clinical training will skyrocket, making continuous, high-level education essential.

At the same time, treatment personalization driven by advanced skin diagnostic tools will allow providers to tailor custom treatment plans and regimens with unprecedented precision. We will also see a stronger focus on the mind-skin connection, fully integrating holistic wellness and internal health alongside traditional topical protocols. Ultimately, the future belongs to providers and practices that prioritize continuous learning, science-backed protocols, and honest client education over quick fixes.
