Today we’d like to introduce you to Savanna Twiddy.
Hi Savanna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in a super small town in southern Ohio, and that’s where I had my start. Financial troubles led to me being raised by my grandparents for the majority of my adolescence, so it was very hard to me to relate to my parental figures. So, I found and fell in love with YouTube creators! With that, came my adoration for makeup, and honestly art in general. I started out with a single Naked 3 eyeshadow palette (thanks to my ever-supportive mother) and some cheap Maybelline foundation from Walmart. I loved to play around in my friends’ makeup too at sleepovers, participated in the school plays as a stage makeup artist, and doing my own little mock tutorials in the mirror as I was getting ready for school. My first actual “gig” came from a family friend, absolutely last minute, when I was around 17 years old. Her wedding makeup artist canceled on her four days before her wedding, and she was frantically asking me if it was possible that I can help her and her bridal party out. When I say I was nervous… the brushes were shaking in my hands. But everyone was so happy with how they looked (I did a pretty decent job for a kid who was thrown into the ring last minute) and I absolutely fell in love with the energy that weddings bring to me. I continued to do makeup as a little side gig (almost completely unpaid) until I moved to Lancaster after graduating college. Starting fresh was very hard, and I actually took a few years off because I felt very discouraged, but I met a model, who has now become one of my closest friends, at a random group photography shoot who legitimately changed my life and my future career for the better. I now work with dozens of photographers all over the state (and beyond!) and have a fairly busy summer ahead of me! I still don’t consider myself full-time, but each new person I connect with over art and beauty is one step closer to fully living my dream. And I am so grateful every day for each and every opportunity I get to make someone feel confident and beautiful in their own skin.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not a smooth road, in the slightest. My family were mainly “go to college or you’re not going to make any money” kind of people, so instead of pursuing my creative interests, I was pushed into going to school, where I got a degree that is beautifully collecting dust on my mantle right now. Even now, managing schedules between my full-time job and my dream career is a constant stressor. Finding a balance is very important, and I promise I will let you know when I finally find it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a self-taught, freelance makeup artist! I tell people I mainly specialize in bridal, mostly because that’s my favorite setting to be in. I just adore weddings. I also work very frequently with many of the boudoir photographers in the greater Columbus area, so I get to do a lot of work in the area as well, which is extremely fulfilling because I’m working with a lot of beautiful women who just need a little help seeing the beauty that we all see in them already. That would be what I’m most proud of, the look on the face of a woman who has struggled to feel beautiful in their own skin, feel as confident and sure of themselves as they deserve to! I think something that sets me apart from others is my focus on providing a comfortable, judgment-free environment to my clients. I do not care about your history, your background, your scars, your insecurities, I care about you and that you walk from my chair feeling like a billion bucks. You can curse like a sailor, tell me the annoying stuff your kids do to get on your nerves, tell me a gross story from work, whatever helps you relax! I just love when my clients treat me like a friend.
What do you think about luck?
One of my biggest clients actually found me by complete luck on her Instagram explore page, so there’s one example right there! I think it’s just always great to remember to put yourself out there. Social media is very scary and can sometimes be pretty harsh, but I was never going to grow unless I put my work out there for others to see. I’ve had several clients that have stumbled upon me by chance, and I ended up created long-lasting working relationships with them!
