Rising Stars: Meet Reva Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reva Davis.

Hi Reva, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a photographer based in Bucyrus, Ohio. Photographing Bucyrus and all surrounding Ohio cities. I have loved photography all of my life. I originally went to college for medical because when I wanted to go to college for photography I was told as a teen that I needed to be more realistic about my career choice, by my school counselor. I finished one year and worked in a doctor’s office for four years, as well as at General Motors. I still wanted to go to college for photography. General Motors offered to pay for schooling since they closed the plant but when I wanted to go for photography, again I was told it was not a marketable career. So, I continued to work at the doctor’s office and retail until my youngest was born. A photographer friend of mine encouraged me to do it on my own, so I did. I bought my first DSLR camera in 2014, and have been in business since.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I feel like my whole life has been a struggle. I was given up for adoption at a very young age, my parents had separated and divorced and my mother met a man who was abusive in many different ways. We were eventually taken away from our birth mother due to the physical abuse and trauma. I still remember the sheriff’s deputies coming out to take pictures of our bruises covering our backsides. All throughout my life I have dealt with feelings of rejection, wanting acceptance, and wanting to have a purpose in life. What I love about photography is that it gives me those feelings. I’m known for my work all around my area, sometimes people I have never met know who I am and speak to me, telling me how much they love my work. It’s fulfilling for me, because in a world where I often felt unwanted, not important, or as if I didn’t belong… I now have a purpose of making others feel good about themselves when often in life I needed the same. My favorite is Boudoir and Portrait photography, I love challenging a woman’s Insecurity and showing her how beautiful she really is because she somehow lost sight of her beauty. I believe in the world we live in; it’s always been a struggle for women to see their own beauty. We are conditioned to believe that our shame, trauma, guilt, or past mistakes defines the woman looking back at us in the mirror. It is my goal to shift those beliefs, show women that it’s not what others see, and help them believe that those thoughts weren’t theirs, to begin with. They were planted there by social media, past traumas, or possibly another person.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a photographer; I specialize in boudoir/portrait photography. I am known for being a confidence advocate to thousands of women. I believe that women get lost in the everyday life and forget that they are beautiful on the outside too. When we are busy taking care of our children or our families, maybe busy with a career or whatever it may be. Our beauty doesn’t exactly take priority. So, I remind them of that. I give them a break from reality and show them. They get a day of pampering and in the end, see themselves as a work of art. I am known for my retreats; I have one every year. I take 12 women away for a weekend, and we have excursions, and self-love activities to strip away the negative self-beliefs, I do lifestyle photoshoots and they have an option to add on a boudoir session!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most didn’t know until this year when I spoke at an event in February of 2022, about the past trauma and abuse I’ve been through. I believe it makes me the person I am today for overcoming all of it instead of letting it break me. This is why I Love to hold retreats for women, to also break away from every day and learn there are many like her with the same struggles, and to take a break for more than just a few hours. Where they can be pampered for an entire weekend, and do excursions and self-love activities to shift the belief that they are not worthy. A safe space where you can feel beautiful and accepted in today’s society!
