Today we’d like to introduce you to Beatrice Balmaseda.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Switzerland, and I have been a flower lover since I was a little girl. Trained and certified in my home country, I have a very unique style that comes through in all my arrangements and bouquets.
I moved to the US in 2010, and together with my husband moved to Cincinnati from Miami, Florida in 2014. Here we found a place to call home.
Bea’s Flowers was born right here in Cincinnati in 2018 with the main purpose of showcasing my unique style and sharing my creations with all flower lovers!
We are a small team of two, myself and my husband Marcos :-), and we are determined to leave our mark in the community and the local economy. We have spent a lot of time and effort into growing this family project, and we are very proud of how far we’ve come and all we have achieved. Even though we are still small, we will continue creating smiles and winning hearts through the magic of flowers.
Interesting fact: I created Bea’s Flowers’ logo myself, including the picture and the letters, using drawing skills I learned during my training!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been very smooth, mainly because we’ve been taking it really slow. We’ve made sure that every little step we took was on solid ground, and every decision was analyzed thoroughly before execution. We started out with just one weekly customer, and that paid for the website hosting. Then slowly the word got out and we started increasing our orders. We didn’t do any marketing at the beginning, other than the occasional Social Media post to increase site traffic. Even now we get most of the new orders through google maps, where we have been receiving excellent reviews.
Lately, the number of orders has been increasing rapidly, to the point that we are starting to think about a physical store. This increase in volume is bringing new challenges in terms of storage capacity and available cooler space to store finished pieces. We hope everything goes smooth as well with the physical store so we can improve on these as well!
Other than that, the road so far has been slow but smooth.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a florist. I help people with their floral needs for weddings, birthdays, funerals, corporate events, personalized arrangements, and pretty much any flower need.
On a typical day I make a trip to my raw material suppliers in the morning, then make the arrangements, and typically deliver them in the afternoon. Sometimes I get last-minute orders as well which I try to fulfill with the available inventory, or else one more shopping trip is necessary.
The big days for me are Mother’s Day, valentine’s day, Easter, and Christmas.
I specialize in unique styles similar to ikebana. This is different from the average arrangement you see in most flower shops which is more like casually placing flowers in a vase. Ikebana style uses colors, lines, forms, and functions to construct a harmonious piece. Each flower is placed carefully to create powerful and elaborate arrangements.
Firstly, I am known for my unique style with personalized designs. The most popular option on my site is the Bea’s Flowers Signature Choice, where people provide me with their ideas, colors, favorite flowers, budget, etc. and I create a unique and personalized bouquet or arrangement just for that person and/or occasion.
I am also known for providing excellent service that goes above and beyond to exceed customer expectations. We have many 5-star reviews on our google maps listing that attests to our quality of products and service as well as our reliability and determination to leave our mark in the community.
I am very proud of where I am today. Two years ago, when I started with this idea, I didn’t imagine that it would get this far. Having a florist shop has been my dream for many years, and I am now living it every day even though I am still only online. My Dad was always my biggest fan and supporter, and I know he is very proud watching over me from the heavens.
But my most proud achievement can’t be expressed with words. My most proud achievement is when I see someone smile when they see my creations, or when I receive a compliment or a wonderful review that says that I made someone’s day. There are no words to express how rewarding that is, and that is a feeling I want to keep growing every day!
I have three years of florist training behind me where I learned about flowers, plants, and even floral design. The average florist in the US learns the trade by doing, and thus having formal training gives me a bit of an edge when combining flowers and making ideas come to life.
In addition, the unique style of my work is definitely something that sets me apart. On top of that, being a small business, I can personally take care of each customer individually, and this goes a long way to
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a wild girl growing up. I remember spending my days climbing trees and being out in nature. I think my passion for flowers started very early as well. I remember as a little girl I used to make bouquets from wildflowers I picked from the forest. I used to put them in a mason jar and played pretend as if I had my own store.
I was always the hands-on type. I enjoyed the physical activities and the arts and crafts; basically, anything where I could use my imagination and my hands. I didn’t like the math and theory classes, but I always shined during the creative stuff.
