Today we’d like to introduce you to AJ Good.
Hi AJ, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My history with masks dates all the way back to around 1999-2000. I had always been into heavier music than most kids my age, and because of that, I was constantly sifting through magazines to find pictures of my favorite bands. One day I was flipping through a rolling stone magazine when I came across a photo of Slipknot, fresh off their debut record, and seeing that image alone changed my life. I was captivated immediately, and this was before I begged my mom to let me check out a music video. Once I did that, saw the imagery paired with the music, it was over. I called a family friend that night who my parents said might have a mask, and to my surprise, he did! He brought it over, and low and behold it was a gas mask…. The same gas mask that the DJ from Slipknot was using in the music video I had seen earlier that day. After that, I knew these things were obtainable. Fast forward 20 years and I have a YouTube channel dedicated to educating and entertaining based directly off my collection.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I wouldn’t say smooth, but I would say it’s been very organic. I never aspired to be a “YouTuber” – it just happened slowly over time. With it becoming a full-time job, there have definitely been a few hurdles to jump, but for the most part, I really can’t complain. It is most certainly the most strenuous job I’ve ever had, but it’s also the most fun. I love my job and couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I make YouTube videos based around my collection of horror/theatrical music-related masks. For something so niche, there is a very wide array of content on my channel. From the channel, I also house a merch store and a Patreon, and I co-run a yearly event here in Chillicothe, basically an open house for fans to come see the collection and a meet and greet to hang out and chat with them.
What sets me apart from others is that I am the real deal, and I don’t need to explain that, the content speaks for itself. I do everything House of Masks related on my own, from the filming and editing to management, even the legal stuff. I post almost daily, and I don’t sell out.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
That’s a good question. I have so many to choose from that I don’t know if I could pick just one. I’ll never forget discovering Slipknot. I know it’s hard to believe but I knew from the second I saw that picture that my life had changed forever… I didn’t know how or why, but I knew that everything has just changed.
