Today we’d like to introduce you to Tierra Jade.
Hi Tierra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I can’t even remember how I got into braiding, I just remember being in 4th grade standing in the bathroom mirror changing my hairstyles every day, so it’s definitely something that came to me naturally. But as far as makeup? I didn’t get into makeup until college. I ended up getting really close to the girl named Brittany! She was FLY! Full face of makeup every day, hair was always laid, outfits always on fleek! So of course, in college we were broke. Brittany would be up all hours of the night sewing in weaves. I was Miss Freshman, so whenever I had an event to attend, she would so my makeup. It wasn’t long before Brittany started teaching me the ropes. Soon I would be up all hours of the night doing hair and makeup with her. So that experience with Brittany in college back in 2012 really stared to burn the flame of my desire of being a makeup artist. So, she’s definitely owed all the credit for introducing me to the game. Now when I came home from college, I reunited with my cousin jasmine. She’s a local makeup artist as well, she really showed me the ropes of different affordable products to use and how to mix and match shades. From that point, I started doing YouTube tutorials on makeup and natural hair. Then Life happened, I got pregnant and sick and decided to walk away from the beauty industry. I actually planned to leave for good. But then I ended moving in with my aunt Sakina who also aspired to get into makeup. Living with her relit the flame in me to get back into makeup. Together we decided to take it serious and took a master class from Olivia Song in Chicago last year. And from that point on I’ve been unstoppable.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has NOT been a smooth road. I still get discourage, because selling yourself or a service you provide is extremely hard. BUT! The proof of desire is in the pursuit, and I am relentlessly going after my makeup career. Being a single mom is one of the biggest road bumps in my journey. I can’t just drop everything and go do makeup. I have to plan and arrange sitters. So, there are plenty of opportunities that I’ve had to miss out on. So that’s still a struggle I’m trying to navigate.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do EVERYTHING lol! But I am a Makeup Artist! I specialize in natural and soft glam looks for the everyday girl. I am most proud of my small clientele that I have built from scratch! I take pride in my work, and I have seen the growth in my technique so I am super proud of that. I’m not sure what the others are doing so I can’t say what sets me apart. I just know I try to give my very best to each client! And my goal is to enhance their natural aesthetic without changing their look completely.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I feel like I’m always willing to learn. And I’m not afraid to invest in myself! Investing yourself helps get you in the room with the right people so that you can seize the opportunity to ask the right questions. And I know that investing in myself will make people pay more attention to me and take me seriously.
