Meet Melanie Fritz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Fritz.

Hi Melanie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I began my career in cosmetology 20 years ago by first settling in with a salon family in Maumee, Oh. I remained working here and establishing a clientele for 12 years until I became a mom and decided to search for something closer to my residence. I moved to a few different salon locations, building my business accelerated by social media, specifically Instagram. I’ve worked in large salons and small salons. I’ve become and instructor and taught cosmetology. I’ve even had a salon suite. And for the past 2 years now, I’ve been an award-winning stylist. I’ve had several opportunities to be a salon owner which just never worked out for one reason or another. I’ve had countless beautiful connections with other stylists, students, and salon owners. In my search for peace and flexibility, I decided to open my own salon suite and bridal room. This is the most at peace I’ve been. I knew I wanted to be an owner of some sort, always thinking I would possibly own a full-service booth rental salon. It wasn’t until the last few years I really dreamed of ownership and finally pulled the trigger on my dream. It’s truly the best of both worlds, owning a peaceful space where I control my environment and my clients feel relaxed and well served under my care. So, my best advice really is just to be patient and dream big. When it feels scary to leap that’s exactly when you should leap. Life is amazing now in my own studio, where my husband, I, and his family helped to build basically from the ground up. I decorated to my own taste. My clients love my space, and I love the peace that comes with it. I love that I’m near home and available for my children at whatever capacity they need. If you’ve ever thought of owning your own space, think of what exactly you’re looking for your space to feel like. For me, it was to not really have to deal with managing anyone else but myself. A calm and relaxing place to manage my clients on my own. I can control the music, temperature, and vibe of the entire experience. This is the most at peace I have ever been in my career, and I highly recommend it. Find out what you truly need, work for it, and make it happen. Just leap! You won’t regret it!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Things weren’t always smooth in transition. There have been heartache in leaving salon families you’ve built core relationships with. There is blood, sweat, and tears. Sometimes you lose a few amazing clients in transition and think of them for years to come. Same with past students and past bosses. And sometimes, you get put into the mix with personalities that just don’t mesh with yours. Or people who truly don’t have your best interest at heart. This is part of life and how you learn and grow as a person. It pushes you to figure out what it really is that you want and make it happen. But that’s the beauty of the industry. The possibilities are literally endless to build your own little slice of peace that works for you. Whether that be managing a team of stylists, making up a small salon family, being a platform artist, educator, or a private salon or suite owner yourself.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
After this many years of experience and education, I’ve landed on specializing as a colorist and bridal stylist. However, I truly do enjoy every aspect of the job. These are my favorite areas. I love replicating, creating, artistically making visions come true in color and in sculpture. Being a part of a bride’s big day is absolutely a joy I continually love being a part of. That’s why I decided to incorporate a bridal suite in my studio. I think what sets myself and my work apart from others is the heart work. I continually do inner work for myself. I commiserate and share my own growth and love with my clients. My entire vibe is centered around growth, healing, love, and being non-judgmental. Each one of my clients is a friend and someone I hold dearly. You can ask anyone. I often funnily refer to people I know or meet as “my friend,” no matter who they are. I feel I have a calm and non-judgemental presence where people not only receive quality hairstyles but a loving and open place to be themselves. I love fostering that feeling. It’s a #1 priority. I am most proud to have a clientele full of friends. My beautiful space I’ve created for myself and to be an award-winning stylist after all of these years. I truly love my career.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
The biggest thing I can stress is just to find or create the environment you need for yourself. If it feels scary, just leap. You won’t regret it. Find a way to love your job and feel at peace in your space, and you’ll never “work” a day in your life. The right people will always find you. ❤️☮️✌🏻
