Meet Marshawn Saint

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marshawn Saint.

Hi Marshawn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Thank you for having me. In 2013, I created a production group called Original Art Beats (OAB) alongside two friends from high school who were already making beats individually and together. I learned how to make beats under my close friend Jalen Murry. In the midst of producing and stuff, I just jumped off the porch and began marketing and managing our production team to build buzz and create demand.

In addition to managing the production group and producing beats, I met Ray iLLa and Spud Cotton over Twitter, who were upcoming hip-hop artists in Chicago. That relationship came from a simple dm to Spud about sending beats to him. After sending beats, he introduced me to Ray iLLa “iLLz” where we landed production on 3 projects (2 solo and a joint production from iLLz and Spud). After the release of those projects, that led me to also managing them. It was a good and crazy time, I was booking shows, connect the dots, and more all at the age of 19.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road for sure has not been easy haha. In 2015, I experienced burnout to a level that made me step away from it as a whole for some years. A few of those struggles were: Not having additional help, lack of deadlines, keeping the team together, and lack of understanding the details within marketing and advertising.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As of now, I work at SiriusXM (Yes, the radio company). In addition to my 9-5, I have started my own agency by the name of THRVE; created a semi-annual music festival entitled “THRVE Fest”, and more. Under the THRVE management co, we manage an upcoming artist by the name of JaXsaun. Pretty much, I oversee everything and make things happen while securing opportunities for the team as a whole.

There are several things that set my team, and I apart are: Understanding the most essential part in creating history is building an internal and external foundation in this life across all aspects. “Each One Teach One. Each One Feed One” is the mindset over here. The only way we can create something that’ll last and have impact is picking each other up when down, helping where someone may lack, possessing a sense of individuality, and staying dedicated to development. We’re not afraid to put our pride and egos to the side to bounce ideas in order move forward as a team. Everyone has a voice, and everyone plays a role here: Jaxsaun (Artist), D. Thomp (President), Chey T (COO), Brian McElrath Jr (Director of Merchandise), Obi & Buckshot (Directors of Protective Services), and I work for all of them lol especially D. Tomp.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck has a little to do with the role I play. If I had to suggest anything, I’d say to be prepared before the opportunity presents itself. Everything is a matter of “When”. If you believe it’s going to happen, it’s just a matter of “when” so put the work in, don’t allow time to be the enemy of your accuracy, and pace yourself.
