Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorenda Woodall.
Hi Lorenda, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I became passionate about hair as a young girl about the age of 7 years old. I realized how patient I was with my hair and how therapeutic it was for me as I rearranged my hairstyles after salon visits or after my grandmother did my hair. Somehow, I managed to do this without her noticing only because it appeared untouched. I began to acknowledge my skills as I affirmed myself often while doing so, but it was when I learned how to braid, that everything changed. In my culture, it’s an honor and privilege to learn how to braid and I taught myself by practicing on my doll. Once you have mastered the art of braiding you become crowned with glory. During my teenage years I became passionate about weave styling and that is when I fell in love with the art of hair. I manifested daily, ” I am going to do hair when I get older!” I became an officially licensed Cosmetologist in 2013 from the late Regency Beauty Institute.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This hair journey has not been easy at all for me! But if you understand the purpose of Ministry then you understand the affliction and when you accept your calling you accept the adversity and persecution that comes along with it. I have stopped, started, stopped, and started again. I have gained clients and lost clients resulting in unstable clientele. I have had the privilege of servicing many different women from different backgrounds learning from them all. I have worked in salons renting space and I have also leased my own space as a salon Loft Owner. I have birthed and raised children while pursuing my vision in the Hair Industry. I have even attempted to re-enter the 9-5 work field only to be detoured right back to my calling of hair. I have made many mistakes such as mismanaging money resulting in inconsistency. Being mocked, talked about, overlooked, and undervalued only made me stronger and wiser. I would not change anything at all. It has all been divine. Many professionals associate success in the industry with money, fame, likes, and verification checks but the truth is you become successful, famous, and rich when a healthy seed has been planted, and even more so if you are blessed to watch it sprout! Today I am humbled and grateful because I realize it is much bigger than hair.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Over the years I have enjoyed being a versatile multi-cultural Cosmetologist. After discovering my purpose, I became very optimistic and began to navigate through the industry God led. Landing in many places on assignment became a part of my personal development. Having the honor to work alongside Elite Professionals has instilled in me skills and expertise I can cherish forever. The integrity of the hair is a top priority! My specialty is Trichology focusing on treating scalps that suffer from common diseases and disorders such as alopecia, dandruff, hair loss, hair thinning, and psoriasis to name a few. Treating scalps with natural products gives the best and most rapid results. I am known mostly for braiding and silk pressing on Natural Hair. My growth and courage has made me tremendously proud. What sets me apart from the rest of the industry is my passion. I’m often told, “You care too much” and as much as I have tried my best not to, my heart would not allow it. I love ministering through the art of hair whether it is in a salon, on set, or on the runway. Currently, my goal is to network and connect with professionals from different backgrounds to help bring awareness to the Hair Industry in hopes to bridge the gap in a uniquely authentic way.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5 to 10 years, the industry will soar! Working-class individuals are requiring more grooming, especially with the pressures of social media, everyone wants to be picture and/or video ready with hair and makeup complete. After defeating COVID-19, many people are no longer hesitant about booking a flight, planning the trip, or going to the event. They are showing up! Most importantly our nation is healing and what better way to heal? Receive hair services that not only satisfy the body but become therapeutic to the soul.
