Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Kuhn.
Hi Joshua, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been practicing Herbalism for eighteen years or so. In the late aughts I bought an old farmhouse and a bit of land in Mount Vernon Ohio to raise medicinal plants and start a little business. Those years it was mostly farmers markets and trade shows as I developed my formulations and continued studies. Eventually I found that I needed a place to work directly with the community and have the things on hand to address their individual wellness concerns. In 2019, just like that, Old Mr. Bailiwick’s was born.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well,,, I’m not entirely sure that anything worth anything, can be accomplished without some struggle. Pandemics and economic uncertainties, person shifts and public interests can always throw a wrench into best laid plans, however, it is my opinion that the Mom and Pop survives on creativity. It is a constant dance of acquisition and enthusiasm. We are always developing new and interesting things for the broader public, as well as maintaining kindness and compassion for not only those who come to us for help, but those who just want to find a little joy in the world.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Old Mr. Bailiwick’s?
Old Mr. Bailiwick’s is a working apothecary with a retro-futuristic Dickensian esthetic. We offer plant-based medicine for a range of ailments: teas, topicals, tinctures, etc.. Beyond that we are a tea shop with a variety of drinking teas, from herbal to black, green and chai. Lastly we are a gift shop. We specialize in curated, uncommon, artfully made items that are always changing. Every time in the shop is a new experience.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
It’s a great question but, difficult to answer as I tend to compartmentalize my personal history and rarely like to revisit it. For relevance sake I will tell you, as a small boy, I once went into an old toy shop that had wonderous objects, beautiful colors and mechanical marvels stashed about. The place was magical and dreamlike and the people were kind and made a boy feel welcomed. It was a formative experience that shaped me in unseen ways. Childhood is so fleeting and it is so important that we, as adults, foster that magic in any way we can.
