Today we’d like to introduce you to Cervando Tejeda.
Hi Cervando, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hi guys! I started working in the representation industry 18 years ago by mistake. At the time I was a finance major looking to make a splash in the financial industry. A childhood friend of mine that I bumped into started talking about life after college, he asked “what do you want to do when you graduate?” And I responded by saying – I want to be a financial analyst, work in private equity, or perhaps a sports agent. Once I said “A Sports Agent” he quickly responded by saying “This guy I know runs his own sports agency, he’s like my dad. I can give him a call to get you an internship.” At the time I was tirelessly looking for an internship the banking system, so when he said that I did not believe him at all. But two months later I was walking into my computer science class when I received a call from my childhood friend letting me know that he had talked to his guy. He gave me the guy’s number I quickly ran out of class and gave him a call. I was persistent for weeks trying to get into his office, I just wanted to learn and understand what the representation business was all about. I finally received an invitation to his office and I took advantage of the opportunity. I stayed persistent, kept my head down, and understood that this business was/is not for the fainted heart. This year marks my 18th year in the business, I have learned so much from a few of the agents/agencies I’ve worked for, all these lessons and experiences have helped me implement and create the philosophy and core values I have created here at Athletes Sports Management (www.athletessm.com). Through hard work, persistence, transparency, integrity, and innovation I have had the chance to experience great successes in my line of work.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Going independent and opening my agency was a huge struggle. But the things I have learned along the way are priceless. All of the adversities are what makes us stronger as individuals and helps us build strong foundations.
