Life & Work with Nick Edstrom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Edstrom.

Hi Nick, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
To explain how I started, I feel it will help to know why. In 2019 I was living in St. Pete, Florida homeless, addicted to drugs, and completely hopeless.

Then a miracle happened, my girlfriend and I found out we were to be expecting. Now you would think this woulda been strong enough to break the chains of addiction, but unfortunately over the next 6months, I would go on to overdose 4 times.

Struggling to put together more than 3days clean at the time, I got the most devastating phone call in my life.

I had to listen to my aunt as she found my mother’s lifeless body from the result of a suicide.

I was wrecked! So many emotions flowed uncontrollably and I coped the only way I knew how. The outcome of this self-medicating destruction was another overdose this time landing me on a 72hold in a local psychiatric hospital.

I called to check on my girlfriend the first moment I could only to reach my aunt who was walking into the delivery room getting ready to bring my son in the world without his father present.

This was my rock bottom!

After completion of a 30day program, I was granted emergency custody of my oldest son because of the conditions of his household.

It was because of this I was a given the opportunity to move to Tennessee. With two suitcases worth of belongings, my oldest son and I boarded a plane to start a new life for our new family.

Within a month Covid hit and so did the first stimulus and we were able to go back to Florida to pick up my girlfriend and our new addition.

Over the next year, coping with all of COVID’s hurdles and learning what it’s like to be sober, I managed to rebuild a life for my family.

So, it’s 2021 now, I have over a year clean and we just moved into a nice two-bedroom townhouse. At this time, I had a licensed carpentry business building rental cabins for a well-known contractor. Life was good, but the pain from the past was still there.

Desperately looking for a positive outlet, personal therapy if you will, I started searching for hobbies on YouTube using various keywords when I stumbled across a channel called “Olddave100”. This guy owned a business teaching viewers how to hand route wood signs. Why not.

With my graffiti/tattoo artist background, I figured I’d give a shot. I always enjoyed art and working with my hands.

One day I pulled out some tools, grabbed a piece of wood, and drew the words “BLESSED”. I picked up a router and carved out the letters. This was my first sign I ever made.

After sharing a picture on social media, I landed my first commissioned order. A pony mustang logo. From the point every time I made a sign and posted it; I would get another order. This would go on the entire year, getting more and more orders.

I think I may have found my passion…

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest struggle during this journey was to make that leap of faith and take this to a full-time operation. Being the breadwinner of the family, I had to make sure this business plan was going be sustainable income. I would spend my mornings marketing and advertising via social media. Go

work a full-time job during the day, then come home and carve a couple signs. Evenings were spent with the family… This went on for about 8 months while I researched my targeted market. During this time a lot of personal growth was achieved while I got a crash course at work/personal life balance. I quickly learned how to manage my time and the importance of it.

January 2022 I was at my desk running the numbers from the previous months and to my surprise I had made DOUBLE the amount working part-time carving signs than I was making working 40+hours in the construction industry.

I was barely scratching the surface at this point and I knew it was time to make that jump.

February 2022 I officially opened

NiX Custom Signs, LLC.

It’s time to shine!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I own a Custom Sign shop specializing in traditional hand-carved wood signs. I also make custom timber display posts. Most of my clients purchase for cabins, ranches, and lodges. That’s pretty much our niche. Being that a lot of them are remote owners, we do really well by offering an installation service as well. I believe a lot my success streams from following my passion and in return, I was able to get to produce a quality product that is high in demand.

“One of a kind, One at a time”

That’s what separates myself from the competition. I value quality over quantity, and I believe we set the bar high by identifying as a premium product from day one.

I think what I’m most proud of is that I was able to create a business that enables me to do what I love. More

importantly it reinforces the reality of entrepreneurship for my children.

We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking?
The greater the risk, the greater the reward. I guess my biggest risk was letting go of a guaranteed paycheck and turning this into a full-time business.

I felt in my heart, it was time. A lot things where lining up just right to make this happen, but I was still scared. I support a family of 4 and this was definitely a risk.

I didn’t do it blind tho. I operated part-time for 3months. It wasn’t long before the numbers encouraged my decision.

That’s what I’m trying to highlight, I made educated evaluation of my risk and determined I was making more money doing this part-time, than I was making at my 9-5. I knew it was time. I’ve been crushing goals ever since!
