Life & Work with Miss V Van-Cartier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miss V Van-Cartier.

Hi Miss, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
It all started one night in NYC during Fashion Week. I was at Boots & Saddles, and they brought me on stage for an audience lip sync battle/ competition. We were each randomly assigned a music artist, and the DJ played 60 seconds of a song by that artist, but we didn’t know which song until it played. The hostess assigned me, Taylor Swift, my song was Blank Space, and I won. I came back to Pittsburgh and got started.

My first performance was at Blue Moon bar’s Open Stage on Wednesday, March 23, 2016. I did Blank Space by Taylor Swift, and since that night, I found my true passion. I started by going out 7 nights a week to every bar and every show across the city. I took advice from some and ignored others. Continuing to compete every week in open stages and other competitions. Constantly investing and growing in my craft all while being a full-time college student with a part- AND full-time job. I won the 2017 Miss Their Ultra Lounge pageant after only 6 months in addition to winning other competitions and open stages both before and after.

I’ve made many connections both online and in person (DragCon LA & NY) and travel all over the US (mostly the East Coast for now) doing shows and advancing my career. Drag has literally saved my life on more than one occasion. And it was through drag that I discovered myself, that I discovered I’m a trans woman.

Since then, I’ve performed every week and hustled to get to a point where I can humbly say I get to do what I love for a living. I host regular monthly/ weekly occurring shows across the city and am still learning and growing every day. I’m anxiously awaiting the day where I get to travel the world and entertain for all kinds of people as well as build relationships with brands and designers to even share my art off the performing stage as an ambassador/ influencer/ model and possibly even actress.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No haha. It’s been a long and very tough road.

I was a full-time college student with a part-time job at my school and a full-time job at a restaurant for the first roughly 3 years.

I went through heartbreak on more than one occasion for different reasons.

I’ve had several severe incidents in my family occur that had a variety of direct impacts on me and my life.

I was almost homeless (hours away from being forced out of my home and having literally nowhere to go)

I was entirely on my own. Yes, a select few established queens guided me here and there with their tips/ advice. But for the most, I had to do everything and learn everything myself.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Drag Entertainer/ Showgirl.

I specialize in lip sync performance (dance, comedy/ camp, spooky/ conceptual)

I’m primarily known for being the Pittsburgh Barbie, for being “that bitch”. I’m known for my beauty (face, hair, nails, body, outfit/ costumes), captivation on and off stage, being a good time girl.

I’m most proud of me. Not to sound conceited or arrogant lol. But I truly have been through A LOT in life, and I’ve never changed. I’ve stayed true to myself through it all and come out stronger every time I think I’m not going to make it. I’ve grown so much as a person in so many beautiful and amazing ways. And I’ve managed to do it all while just being authentic, genuine, real, and spending my time hustling and minding my own business.

What sets me apart from others is just that. I’m me, and they’re them. No one can do me like I can. My presence, energy, professionalism, and authenticity speaks for itself.

What are your plans for the future?
It’s always up and out for me. There is no “top,” so I’m always looking for things/ ways to improve and grow and expand.

Like I said previously, I’m looking forward to someday getting to travel the world doing what I do.

I want to model, act, dance/ perform, e an influencer/ ambassador for brands and designers and organizations.

I want to find a management company to represent me and help me achieve some of these things.

I want to start selling merch again and have my website up and running.

I’m always full of ideas and always looking for more
