Life & Work with Kiara Booker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiara Booker.

Kiara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started painting at a very young age just random pieces of art here and there. My love of painting for others didn’t develop until 2018. Some of my biggest inspirations include Brionya James, Frank Morrison and Bob Ross. My grandfather also has a lot to do with my love for drawing.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I sometimes struggle with finding the right audience and balance to create new art

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work mainly with acrylic and oil paints. My style of art is combining my love for melanin and bright and bold colors and using inspiration from images of my culture, mainly women of color. I like to focus on the femininity and beauty of Black women, their bodies and facial structures. As a woman, my voice must stand out because of the advantages that male artists have. I am most proud of how I’ve grown as a self taught artist over the last three years. Although Covid has put a stop to events I had scheduled I have found other ways to get my work out there. I’d like the say my color use, bold strokes and ability to create without sketching set me apart from other artists.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My biggest supporters come from my family and my home state and have grown and branched out to 16 other states.. My mother has been my number one support in continuing my creative process. Huge credit to everyone who has shared or purchased my work. You can’t forget social media; Instagram and Facebook are huge in today’s art industry and both platforms have helped me get my work out for the world to see.
