Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Anderson.
Hi Emily, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I moved to Orlando, Florida in 2007 to get the ultimate cosmetology experience at Paul Mitchell the School Orlando. After completing my program, I moved back to Northeast Ohio to begin my career, networking, continuously learning all aspects of the business, and hustling to get my clientele built. After only a few years behind the chair, I decided to become self-employed at only 22 years-old and quickly learned that it was the way to go in our industry! My goal had always been to open my own salon and I knew that I wanted to help other stylists that had an entrepreneurial spirit, make this intimidating jump to working for themselves. In May of 2018, I opened Good Co. Salon & Spa in downtown Cuyahoga Falls and at the same time the entire city was being rebuilt around me. It was an incredible experience to be a part of my own hometown’s revival.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Good Co. was just shy of 2 years old when we were shut down in March of 2020 due to Covid 19. I had a 1-year-old and was 7 months pregnant when going through this stressful 8 week shut down! My overhead expenses weren’t disappearing and I felt guilty accepting rent from our stylists so I spent countless hours searching for grants and any avenue I could to bring any income in so they did not have to. My team was so supportive and understanding during that time and that meant more to me than anything. Being that our salon is all independent contractors, we had no idea if we were ever going to get help from unemployment and unfortunately did not find out until we were re-opening two months later.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Behind the scenes, my specialty is helping other stylists become self-employed and holding yourself to the highest standards. Our salons specialty is our culture! Good Co’s team is full of incredibly talented artists but we also strive to make everyone feel loved and welcomed in our space! We are in a people business and our passion is to make you feel beautiful and seen and that must start when you walk in our doors. It is not unlikely that stylists are visiting with others’ guests and were all joining in on one conversation at the salon. We are lucky to be in such a positive and fun business so why not try to make the best out of our work environment!
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I grew up with 4 older brothers and sisters and I would say my favorite memory would be our family trips to the east coast! We had a large, gold, Astrovan and all of us would pile in and go on a giant road trip every summer. All of my siblings had big personalities so everything we did was constant entertainment.
