Inspiring Conversations with Octavia Merritt of OckBoks Boutique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Octavia Merritt.

Octavia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a little girl, I always was into girly things like makeup and hair. My aunt BJ used to call me Ms. Prissy. Lol I loved it. I always had to have chapstick on, and hair had to be done.

So, when I started middle school, they had us take a career class, and I decided I wanted to be a hairstylist. That is how my journey began.

After high school, I decided to go to hair school at Ohio State School of Cosmetology, and after 10 months I felt it wasn’t for me so I went to college. I went to Shawnee State University. I didn’t finish because my passion for hair and makeup came back. I was doing hair on the side to make ends meet while in school.

So, I moved back to Columbus, OH and went to Regency Beauty school, and graduated. My life wasn’t easy while in hair school but I got through it. I passed my Boards and received my cosmetology license in 2016!! THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!

I felt like all the back and forth, all my failures in life mattered, and I finally finished a goal. My grandparents told me it don’t matter how long it takes as long as it gets done, and I was glad!

I started working at Smartstyles in Reynoldsburg, Oh and I meet some of the best hairstylist and mentors I know! They took me under their wings and gave me all of the knowledge I could possible soak in! Ms. Camille Turner and Ms. Rose I owe EVERYTHING to them.

They helped mold me and helped me to understand what it takes to be in this line of work. I absolutely love what I do and love the people I have come to meet.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. I have been homeless, sleeping in the back of my car in the wintertime.

I remember being in hair school and my teacher taking a collection for me so I can put gas and get food and showing up early every day so I can take a shower or get ready for the day.

But I was determined to stay on track and graduate. I found out I have Lupus in 2020, and in October 2021, it has gotten worse. I’m graceful for family and friends that I have to support me and help me when I need it.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
