Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimmy Moley.
Hi Jimmy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My path to becoming an adult and sports psychiatrist, while taking turns at many points, has remained centered on my fulfillment in the service of others, belief in the power of sports to unite and propel individuals toward their potential, and fascination with the science and art of the human mind. Having received an undergraduate degree in science preprofessional studies and poverty studies at the University of Notre Dame, I entered medical school at The Ohio State University with a goal to pursue sports medicine. It was there that I first witnessed the powerful scope and potential of psychiatry, a field that uniquely combines scientific research and discovery with the creativity and unpredictability of individual personality. I decided to combine my interests and stayed at Ohio State for adult psychiatry residency and obtained a certification in sports psychiatry.
As I progressed through residency training, I gradually began to develop of vision of my post-training career – one focused on delivering evidence-based, personalized mental health care to high perforning individuals. Conversations with mentors and industry leaders indicated that this vision would be difficult to enact in traditional healthcare systems where productivty is often valued more than the quality of care delivered. For this reason I made the somewhat unconventional decision to start my own private practice right after graduation and move home to Northeast Ohio. The goal was to build a small, concierge-style practice that delivers confidential and expert care for the mind and body. Now, almost one year later, the practice continues to grow steadily and has expanded beyond expectations. I am always grateful for the support of friends, family, and mentors and could not be more excited to see how I can maximize my impact on this community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been countless struggles and obstacles along the way, and my progress would not be possible without the guidance and support of my family, friends, and mentors. The educational path to becoming a physician is challening in both length and complexity, and there were many times where I questioned if this was the right path. It is a journey that rewards intelligence and dedication but also requires significant sacrifice and patience – both of which I have had to practice and have become increasingly familiar. In addition, medical education is highly specialized but also narrow in focus. This presents a challenge when faced with the task of starting a business, something initially that seemed nearly impossible. I continue to grow in my ability to tackle large challenges one step at a time and rely on the expertise and experience of others to help guide my progress. Still, I am constantly in a state of learning a growing from mistakes, acquiring new skills along the way and appreciating the complexity of this challenge.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I own and operate a psychiatric private practice dedicated to the mental health care of adults and athletes. I provide both medication management and psychotherapy services to high performing individuals in a concierge-style setting. This includes new consultations within one week of initial contact (with or without a referral), same day and next day appointment availability, and direct access for questions and concerns outside of appointment time. I am trained to diagnose and treat all forms of mental illness in adults (including depression, anxiety, ADHD and others), and approach mental health care from a holistic and evidence-based approach. Treatment plans incoropate all factors that affect mental health and are designed for each individual. I am most proud of the relationships I have built as a result of my work, and I am constantly inspired by patients who dedicate themselves to not only relieving the burden of mental illness but also to optimizing their mental wellness.
