Hidden Gems: Meet James Yoder of Picture it Engraving

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Yoder.

Hi James, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We started Picture it Engraving in 2017 because as I was running a construction company, I saw the need for someone to fulfill customer appreciation gifts with a good quality product. We set the engraver up in my son’s garage and he did engraving one the days we were not busy with construction. We found out in a hurry there is also a need for custom engraving for gifts for individuals. The demand was so great that we moved to our present location at 232 Dover Road NW Sugarcreek, Ohio in November 2019. We did a lot of engraving on products during the winter 0f 2019-20 and were opening our showroom at the end of March 2020. Well, that didn’t happen till June because of the Covid 19 lockdown. But we did open in June of 2020 and we have been busy since. In the spring of 2021, we added an additional engraver to keep up with the customers’ needs. We have since added custom T-shirts to our business, and we have many options of how we do them. We can do them in vinyl and they are a fast and easy way to do t-shirts. We can also do the old-time screen printing which is more for bigger orders. Just new this year we purchased a direct to garment printer which works for both small and large orders depending on certain situations it is the best for the job.

We basically have 2 complete different groups of customers. The one is businesses that have a need for a quality product to use for customer appreciation, marketing tools, employee gifts or so much more. We will help them promote their brand.

Then we have the other group that is an individual that just simply wants something special for someone that they can’t purchase at a regular store. We can personalize the gift to their exact needs. We have a large variety of products although our tumblers are still our best sellers. Also, the customer can bring in their own product and we can personalize it for them. We make gift-giving easy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not always been smooth but I have been an entrepreneur for pretty much my whole life so I understand that. The biggest struggle we have had was when we were planning on opening in March of 2020 and of course the covid 19 hit and we couldn’t open. We have been proactive in getting more machines and equipment before we really have to have it so we can stay on track with the customer needs. I like to deliver their products when we say we will and I try to make sure we have the tools to do so.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Picture it Engraving?
We are a custom gift company specializing in drinkware of all kinds for promotions and other sorts of gifts. What sets us apart is we do absolutely guarantee our work and we are very particular in the product that we send out. If it’s not done right, we will work on it till it is. I am really proud of my team as they understand what I want in quality and having experienced sub-quality products from suppliers in the past they make me proud every time. One thing I am really excited about is right now we are in the process of branding some of our drinkware with our own brand, and with the quality product we are producing from the factory it will give us an opportunity to even better service our customers with upgraded products for the same price point as before.

We also are very happy that we can donate a portion of every sale to a non-profit that is near and dear to our hearts. I will have a picture with some info on the organization included with the picture section.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is working with my dad on the farm and when I was 15 my parents giving me the opportunity to purchase products from a catalogue and selling them in the paper. Remember this was before internet. I remember the thrill of receiving a check in the mail and knowing that I will make someone very happy with my product. This was right in the beginning when digital watches came out, and I was selling them.
