Exploring Life & Business with Tizzie Nuss of The Spark Project

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tizzie Nuss.

Hi Tizzie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Raised in a family of educators, I started my career in education, managing programs that provide care for children before and after school. My love of people eventually drew me to Human Resources, where I’ve worked alongside brilliant minds at companies from Honda to Battelle to IGS Energy. My passion—and, quite frankly, a whole bunch of signs from God—propelled me here, doing this.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not having any experience in bringing a product to life felt intimidating at times. Beyond that, I didn’t know a thing about the ballistics industry, which felt confusing and overwhelming. But we can do hard things, right? So, I started researching. And networking. And figuring out the next best step every day.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
One school shooting is too many. Period. As a mom, I continued to see these heartbreaking events happen and felt helpless. God placed this issue on my heart. But the thought of trying to create something to protect kids felt too complex for me to tackle. That was until 2017 when I got my last sign – the day I lost my eyesight. That day and the two days that followed were the scariest days of my life. I promised God that I would never question my calling again. So, when my vision came back, I got to work.

In 2018, I created the Spark Project®, and in 2020, we started manufacturing our patent pending SPARK® Shields right here in Ohio. The SPARK® Shield is a lightweight bullet-resistant shield that doubles as a folder that kids can easily transport to and from school.

As we push forward, we’re super focused on engaging parents, teachers, and developing a nationwide community around our cause. A community that has had enough wants more for our kids and teachers, and that stands together to spark change for good!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
My real name is Elizabeth. : )
