Exploring Life & Business with Mikayla Chess of Mpressive Exposure

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikayla Chess.

Hi Mikayla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I love when people ask this question but I always have to decide if I should give the long version or the short one to answer this question. It started in my teen years. I started modeling and soon after started to participate in pageants. Modeling was amazing, I trained here in Cincinnati and got to travel, doing runway shows. I walked in New York, Black Chicago Fashion Week, Walk Atlanta, Derby City Fashion Week, Charolette, and more. After winning Miss Black Ohio Teen 2014 and competing as Miss Black Ohio Talented Teen USA 2015 at the Miss Black USA pageant I gained so much confidence and wanted everyone to feel the same way I did when I was on stage in their everyday life. At first, I started by teaming up with Friars Club, a youth sports organization that I volunteered at for years. Together we put on a “Back to School Clothes Drive Fashion Show!” I knew back-to-school shopping was a privilege. I also knew the feeling you get on the first day of school when you walk the halls in a fresh fit! You feel unstoppable, confident, and ready to take on the year. With this knowledge, I wanted to provide underprivileged kids with the tools and resources to experience back-to-school excitement with confidence. I held a 2-hour workshop on confidence, self-love, and modeling before the show, and then they hit the runway. Each participant got clothes to wear on the runway and to take home, school supplies, food, and lots of love! Not only was the show great for them it was a passion project for me. I loved it so much that I started an annual Holiday Fashion show as well. The participants got training, clothes, 3-5 Christmas gifts, and a holiday meal. One year Tri health donated TVs and each family took one home! With these shows, I found my purpose and passion. I continued to model, act and participate in pageants becoming Miss Black Ohio 2019/2020 which helped me continue to polish my skills and find more opportunities to speak on a specific platform. I wanted to reach as many people as possible by talking about self-love, confidence, and success in a fun and interactive way, so I expanded my company. I put together activity-based and content-rich programming to facilitate workshops across the tri-state. I combined my passions of talking, modeling, and sharing positivity. My first love has always been talking and I thought what better way to make a living than talking! With the support of my family, I was able to do just that. Speak for a living, supporting and pouring into others the way my family supports and pours into me.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Because of the support I have in my life the road has been smooth sailing. My mom, aunts, brothers, and friends help me every step of the way. But of course, life has a way of turning smooth sailing into turbulent waters now and again. About 4 years ago I lost my sister to a brain aneurysm. Her sudden passing made it hard to focus on anything other than family. I was unsure if I could continue to be a beam of light for others when I was in such a dark place. When remembering her life, I was reminded to live in my purpose and passion. To do any and everything I could to live my best life. To create a life and legacy I could be proud of no matter when it’s my time to go. I knew she was proud of me and would want me to continue to help others. Many times, I dedicate my work to her!

Covid was an obstacle that I was able to pivot around but I will say I have a new appreciation for in-person events and interactions. Other challenges that impact most business owners including myself are marketing, growing my business, and juggling all the projects and ideas I have.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Mpressive Exposure is where personal development meets entertainment. Mpressive Exposure exposes people to and develops self-love, confidence, and success for students, individuals, and businesses through interactive & engaging events. Hiring a speaker who is knowledgeable and engaging can enhance your event and capture your audience. Everyone enjoys listening to a great storyteller. I can hold an audience’s attention while delivering an entertaining message that resonates and sticks in the minds of the listeners long after the event ends. Whether it’s conferences, assemblies, classrooms to religious institutions, corporate events, seminars, or panels guarantee your audience will have a memorable experience! You can hire me as a keynote speaker, emcee/host, panel discussion leader, panelist, or workshop facilitator.

When it comes to workshops, I provide a tailored experience to meet your goals. My in-person or virtual workshops and presentations combine unique content and information with hands-on skill-building. What sets me apart? Participation is encouraged through group exercises, games, skill development, music, and more. The sessions are content-rich, activity-based, and can build upon one another. Some workshops are paired with a workbook to foster participation in any environment. I’ve worked with clients such as Friars Club, Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, and Cincinnati Public Schools. I’m most proud of how quickly we see change and transformation in the groups I work with.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
It’s interesting how much apps can help when you know how to utilize them the right way! I love Instagram (@Hey_its_kay) and Tik Tok (@hey_itss_kay). There are way too many pages to mention them all! I read the blog psychology today. I just finished reading “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” and I am currently reading “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success.” I am always open to new recommendations for books, apps, blogs, and other resources! My main resource is talking to people rather it be family, friends, business partners, clients, fellow pageant queens, or strangers.
