Exploring Life & Business with Lauren Frederick of Loving Your Look

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Frederick.

Hi Lauren, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started loving makeup from a very young age. At as young as 4 years old I was always sitting with my grandma in her bathroom watching her do her makeup. She taught me from that, that a woman’s beauty comes from within and makeup is to accentuate that inner beauty. I took that piece with me as I became older and was finally allowed to wear it on my own. I became more involved in the industry when I was 15 and started working at Macy’s in the cosmetic department. I continued to work there at my original store then transferred around 2017 and worked there until 2021. After my store location transfer, I was finally afforded the opportunity to work with my dream cosmetic company, MAC Cosmetics. To me they are a brand that stands for everything I’ve loved over the years about makeup. They are a brand for anyone that loves the art of makeup.

When the Macy’s location I was working at closed in 2021, I was sad, but that sadness and fear of what was to happen next with me turned into fuel for starting my business. I started my business called Loving Your Look officially in October of 2021 at the age of 22. My business is one that is founded in helping people of all race, gender, and sex feel their most happy and genuine selves. I specialize in soft glam looks. However, I also create looks for any special occasion such as birthdays and weddings, and am a certified artist.

Makeup and expressing myself through my artistry have helped me in more ways than one. What I think makes me different from others is that I choose to run my business with the same principles I was taught at a young age. The principles of loving who I am and to always be unapologetically me. Loving Your Look is more than me doing makeup and making people look good on the outside. It is about being able to move through life helping others enhance their inner beauty and always love their look.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business has not been a smooth road. Anything new and unknown is always scary. Some struggles have been getting my name out. There are many talented individuals in the city and it was hard gaining clients. Social media and word-of-mouth reviews /recommendations have been a few of my ways of gaining new clients. Another bump along the road was learning to balance regular outside life with my business life. In the beginning stages of starting my business, I was focusing on also graduating from college. With working towards my BA in Organizational Leadership it was hard for me to balance school and my outside business life. Doing makeup was making me happier than school was. I knew that it was only going to be difficult temporarily so I found a way to do both through leaning on my family and friends.

As you know, we’re big fans of Loving Your Look. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

What I am most proud of brand-wise is my individual growth in the industry and my artistry. In the short time, I have been professionally doing makeup, I have been able to work with so many inspiring people of all walks of life that make me fall in love with what I do. What I want the readers to know about my brand is that I’m committed to all my clients and that when they are happy, I feel even happier.

We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking?
My view on risk-taking is that it is essential for growth. Anyone that is not willing to take a risk on themselves and believe in their abilities is content on staying stuck inside their comfort zones. For me, I would say my biggest risk has been starting my business. Not only was it risky financially but also risky in me not being able to easily maintain a work-life balance. From risk-taking and becoming aware of the workings of this industry, I learned nothing in this industry or even lifetime is guaranteed. Some things require taking a leap of faith and require you to bet on yourself.
