Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Wagner.
Hi Jessica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A natural entrepreneur, I started my first business, Exhibit A Models, when I was 22. In 2002, the social media world wasn’t anywhere near what it is today. I mostly operated on MySpace and a site called OneModelPlace. I honestly feel that if social media would have been as mature and accessible then as it is now, I would have achieved even greater success. I ran my promotional modeling company through networking online for seven years. Connecting with people using the internet fascinated me so the truth is, I never really stopped networking online.
Through the years I have always stayed involved with the growth of social media and invested hours in researching techniques and staying on the cutting edge of professional social media marketing techniques. In all honesty, I love it! I get so excited about social media: seeing posts go viral, watching numbers grow, making people laugh, and when I can connect sales to a series of posts I’ve made, I get really excited! I also love researching how current successful brands are doing it right, too. I feel that social media genuinely levels the playing field for small start-ups, local retailers, and small businesses.
At 30, I realized I would finally need to earn a college degree to obtain any type of job in the current economy. The obvious choice for me was to attend an accredited university, you guessed it, online. I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Communication in June of 2015. Throughout my 4+ years of getting my education, I mostly worked from home doing social media for local organizations in my hometown of Wooster, Ohio. The more I did it, the more I realized it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my working days.
Since I started Jus B Media in April of 2015 I’ve become the Social Media Editor of Women’s Journal Magazine, the President of FemCity Akron, and learned oh, so much about website design and development as well as search engine optimization. Jus B Media has blossomed from your “local social media girl” to a well-rounded Boutique Agency that can handle all the things.
Throughout my seven years in business, I’ve also realized some gaps in the budding digital agency industry so most recently, I’ve created propriety software to help with onboarding and asset organization called The Honey Pot App, available July 2022.
My goals for Jus B Media are to continue to successfully drive business in the background using social media, sales funnels, and digital ads for my clients. I want to teach them that social media is not only the most cost-effective answer to their marketing needs but the most potent way to engage with their audience. I want to watch my client’s bottom lines soar. I’m passionate about what I do, and because of that, I want nothing more than to see my clients booming in their industry.
So, in closing, I’ll say one more time, “I LOVE what I do!”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This is a multifaceted question. When I started social media marketing there weren’t a lot of people doing what I set out to do. I never wanted to be the “local social media girl.” I knew I wanted to start a full-service business. I was hired by PR Firms as well as other traditional marketing agencies to handle social media for their clients. I also had my own clients I obtained by teaching workshops and networking. In short, there wasn’t competition in my neck of the woods (Northeast Ohio). Because of that, I saw exponential growth over the first five years in business. I had national clients, hired a team, and started offering services beyond social media management, reputation management, and website development.
And then COVID-19 hit. All of our processes were suddenly obsolete and working with 24 clients at the beginning of 2020 – we had a lot of shifting and pivoting to do. There was an absolute need to communicate in the kindest way possible to our clients’ audiences the new processes they were putting in place and, in some cases, say nothing about what was happening. A hurdle we had to overcome was getting our clients to actually communicate with us on a regular basis because prior to the pandemic, we knew our clients so well we just rolled with the content we collected and created on our own.
Jump to 2022 and we’re down to 14 clients and we are super comfortable here. A huge lesson we had to learn as a team is that we are much more comfortable working with fewer clients who need more services so we can handle the full picture for them. If we understand their messages and goals from their website and the SEO, we are handling, the blogs we are posting, and the monthly email that goes out, then – and only then – can we create meaningful and converting social media campaigns.

A lot of our competition has hired us to create their websites for them because it’s a different language they don’t understand. When a client engages with us, we don’t just push stuff out on social media or blog posts. We sit with them and create an Intensive Report that paves the way for their Content Strategy. We deep dive into our client’s brand, understand their culture, develop their target persona with them and help them get the foundation of all of their marketing from the get-go. This not only helps us, but it also helps them understand where to take their traditional marketing or all of their marketing beyond our engagement. We love this part of the process and it really sets us apart from our competition. It can take a month before we start creating content for our clients because getting it right from the start is the most important part of the process.
Jus B Media is a woman-owned business and I am a lesbian and messages of equality and love are grounded in our copy. We feel this is just one area of social justice we can support and educate our audience on. We also advocate for Black Lives Matter and the “Adopt Don’t Shop” movement among many others. Being a groundbreaker in the industry a lot of people know me personally or Jus B media and using our digital voices to bring a little more joy and peace to this world has been such an incredible honor.
Any big plans?
As previously mentioned, we noticed a gap in the digital marketing communication process. We noticed we were sifting through emails and texts all too often and we found ourselves asking, “where are we in this process?” We also noticed that asset management was falling off and when a contract ended, clients were asking us for their passwords to their own accounts.
Because of this, I sought out a coder and began creating proprietary software that could solve a lot of these problems for us. Not only would it serve as our primary communication tool and keep conversations in one thread and easily accessible, but it would also serve as our client onboarding tool. Gathering their proprietary information to get them set up and get access to their accounts in a timely manner was our main goal and then the ideas started flowing.
We are still in BETA and plan to roll out The Honey Pot App in July 2022. It will be a subscription-based software that will help streamline and organize other agencies’ and solopreneurs processes for them, as well. We are very excited for this rollout and it has already been a game-changer at our agency.
