Exploring Life & Business with Jackie Lybrand of Blush Cookie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Lybrand.

Hi Jackie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Blush Cookie Co. LLC was started on a whim! I have been a stay-at-home mom since my almost 2-year-old son was born in 2020. I received a stand mixer for Christmas last year from my husband. I had only ever used one a handful of times prior. His beloved Georgia Bulldogs were going to the college football national championship and I made cookies with the hardest two colors to mix in royal icing: red and black (iykyk)! I had no idea what I was doing, but taught myself by watching videos on Instagram and YouTube and reading a lot! My friend Lauren asked if I would be willing to make cookies for her daughter’s birthday, then I ended up making her wedding cookies too. From there, I decided this would be a great chance for me to have a creative outlet and earn some money while also being home with my son.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My life was thrown upside down at the end of my pregnancy in May 2020. My mom’s breast cancer had become terminal and we were in some of the scariest, unknown times of the pandemic. My son was born with a surprise soft cleft palate which presented its own challenges. When my son was 10 weeks old, my mom passed. My husband and I moved my 17-year-old brother from NC into our tiny Mt. Lookout basement. I was honestly struggling with new motherhood, trying to make sure my brother graduated virtual high school and obviously grieving. Less than 2 months later my dad passed. I felt like I couldn’t catch a break. Surviving this time period changed me for the better!

Eventually, my brother graduated high school and is now happily living back in NC. We got backyard chickens which have brought me so much joy! My son Beau had palate repair surgery when he was 9mo at Cincinnati Children’s hospital and is absolutely thriving! He is such a smart and adorable kid that is the biggest fan of my cookies!

These were life struggles that coincidentally led me to cookies. Baking is a science, but decorating is an art. It’s therapeutic for me to envision and bring to life each cookie set I make.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Blush Cookie Co. LLC?
Although I am new to cookies, I have already invested so much time and energy into being a “cookier”. Feedback I have gotten is that my cookies not only look amazing but taste delicious too! I make BIG 3-5” vanilla or chocolate sugar cookies that are rolled thick also. I am always practicing and trying to learn new decorating techniques.

In March 2022 I went to CookieCon in Reno where I got to meet, socialize, and learn not only decorating but business and life skills from some of the best cookiers in the world! It was honestly the experience of a lifetime and I cannot wait to go again. I am also a part of a social media group called “The Cookiers” where every month I get a mystery box of 3d cutters delivered and I take a class (usually pre-filmed videos) learning the techniques of decorating that set. We also just support each other in this cookie life with everything from product recommendations to recipes. There is also a great Cincinnati cookie community. I am all about supporting and lifting each other up! I think a lot of cookiers are.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is a well-balanced life where I can be a great mom and wife, but also have my own life and hobbies outside of that. I am so fortunate that my husband’s career supports us financially. My cup is honestly filled by making people happy!

Pricing:

  • My prices range from $48-68 per dozen. The most common cookie set you will see on my Instagram @blushcookieco usually falls into my “detailed tier”. The detailed tier includes a mix of designs ranging from simple to very intricate to create a cohesive, balanced set of cookies. A few colors, a few techniques and piping styles, metallics, and sometimes florals are included in these sets. It is a time-consuming task to decorate cookies with royal icing. After accounting for supplies and the time put into design, bake, wash dishes (the worst), and then decorate, I truly feel my pricing is reasonable. I think it’s important to know your worth!
