Today we’d like to introduce you to Helaina DePace.
Hi Helaina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I think most people when they are younger start to dream of where they want to be and what they want to do when they grow up.
When I was younger, and even in my early adult years, I’ve existed in what is referred to as “survival mode.”
Growing up with an unstable family and a chaotic upbringing did not allow a lot of time for dreaming.
When you’re living in survival mode the future is not in the forefront of your mind, you’re focused on the moment and how you’re going to make it through.
As I got older, I got deeper into survival mode and the dreams of my future self were less and less. I had no idea what I wanted to do or where I wanted to be, but it felt like time was running out. And as friends were sharing about their futures, I was quietly keeping to myself.
In high school, I decided to take cosmetology. Doing hair was not a dream of mine, but it sounded “fun.”
Little did I know that my decision to go to cosmetology school would be the spark that I needed to jumpstart something that would end up lighting up my entire life.
I never saw myself owning a business, especially not a salon. Not because I didn’t believe I could, but because I simply never wanted to. After becoming a licensed cosmetologist, owning a salon was not a dream of mine.
Yet somehow here I am, a hairstylist of 13 years heading into my salon’s 3rd year of business.
After spending years in the industry and working for other people, I started to catch myself dreaming of things I would do differently, the space that I would create, and the team that I would ideally like to work with.
Those little moments of wandering thoughts became the fuel to a spark that had been waiting to ignite into something bigger.
And one day the stars aligned and that dream burst into reality and my salon, Mint Hair Collective opened its doors.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Opening a business 6 months before a global pandemic can surely present some unforeseen struggles, but we were able to make it through.
Aside from that… the biggest challenge that I found myself facing was trying to do everything on my own. It’s not that I value control, it is more or less that I didn’t know where to find the help that I needed.
There’s no checklist for opening a salon and the things needed vary from state to state so a quick Google search would often leave me with more questions than answers.
But as I’ve built my network the feeling of being lost has become less and less and through a lot of time spent on the internet, I’ve found reliable places for business resources and have joined communities of other business owners for support.
