Exploring Life & Business with Dr. Emily Roedersheimer of Balanced Living Functional Medicine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Emily Roedersheimer.

Hi Dr. Roedersheimer, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hi. I’m Dr. Emily Roedersheimer, but that’s a mouthful so everyone just calls me “Dr. Emily”. I had been a board-certified family physician in the Columbus area for more than a decade when my career path took a change. Now I am thrilled to be practicing functional medicine and helping people reverse, or greatly improve, their chronic medication conditions. Let me tell you a little bit about how I got where I am today.

My Journey

I was originally drawn to medicine through my own life experiences. When I was 10 years old, I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. After years of medications, injections, and frustration, I came upon an article by Dr. Mark Hyman that discussed functional medicine and how it can reverse such conditions. The article talked about how the food we eat can either help us heal or harm us and the impact of lifestyle choices on our health. By starting an anti-inflammatory diet and following other functional medicine principles, I was able to eliminate all of the prescription medications and am now in remission! Discovering that it was possible to reverse an autoimmune condition in this way, I wanted to learn what other benefits functional medicine had, and how I could spread this knowledge to others. I was on a mission! So, I started my training through the Institute for Functional Medicine and have received my certification (IFMCP) after years of hard work.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest struggle was starting my own business with absolutely no business training. I left the comfort and safety of a traditional office that was run for me. I have learned a lot and actually come to enjoy being an entrepreneur. I am creating a practice that runs the way I want it to while serving my patients in the best way possible.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am the owner of Balanced Living Functional Medicine. I created my business to offer functional medicine to patients in a manner that allows for the best optimal outcomes. Functional medicine determines how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the root causes of disease for each individual. I help people reverse chronic disease to get off of medications, find a reason for symptoms that have not been explained by conventional medicine or help prevent illness down the road.

The vast majority of the improvements that come from functional medicine are due to the lifestyle changes that are made. These things take time and extra support. So, I have set up my practice as a membership. I do not take insurance because then I am held to the model of short visits and no time to really understand what is going on. My patients all start with 3 months of health coaching where they dial in the lifestyle changes that will make such a difference – we look at optimizing their nutrition, sleep, movement, and stress management. After 3 months of coaching, the vast majority feel so much better and many don’t need to see the doctor. Sometimes there are lingering things that haven’t been cleared up by the lifestyle changes and that is where I focus in working with them. We do a deep dive with some functional medicine labs that evaluate their gut health, stress response, and much more. By taking much more time than a traditional doctor (up to 1 hour for a follow-up and almost 2 hours for a new patient appointment), I can really spend time to get some answers.

I offer online courses, group health programs, coaching, and 1 on 1 visits with myself. I worked hard to create multiple points of entry into my practice for all levels of patient readiness and financial means. There is something for everyone!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
The biggest risk I have taken was leaving a lucrative family practice of almost 15 years to start over from scratch. I knew it was a risk, but honestly, I didn’t hesitate because I knew that functional medicine was the right way to practice medicine. It aligned with my values and allowed me to spend the time I wanted and needed to get to know my patients. So, the risk was well worth it!
