Exploring Life & Business with Dwayne Hunter of DWAYNE HUNTER INSURANCE AGENCY LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dwayne Hunter.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I want to take you back to when I was five years old.
That was the moment my life changed forever. I lost my mother to gun violence. She was only nineteen years old. Nineteen.

She had me when she was just fourteen, and even though her time here was short, her impact on my life has lasted forever.

After she passed, my brother and I were taken in by our grandparents. They raised us in Lincoln Heights, Ohio. They didn’t have everything—but they gave us everything we needed: love, discipline, and a foundation to stand on.

Growing up, I found my outlet in sports. Athletics became more than just a game—it became my escape, my focus, my purpose. In high school, I earned ten varsity letters. And that work paid off when I received a football scholarship to the University of Cincinnati.

I was living the dream.

As a freshman, I made an impact right away—setting records for kickoff returns and return yardage, and becoming one of the leading rushers on the team. Everything I had worked for was right in front of me.

But then life happened… again.

During the summer before my sophomore year, an MRI revealed serious damage to my back. The doctors told me something I never imagined hearing:
“You should stop playing football.”

Not slow down. Not take a break.
Stop.

In that moment, I had a choice.

I could let that diagnosis define me… or I could redefine myself.

You see, adversity wasn’t new to me. I had already faced loss. I had already been forced to grow up faster than most. And what I realized in that moment is something I want all of you to understand:

Adversity doesn’t destroy you—it reveals you.

It reveals your strength.
It reveals your mindset.
It reveals who you choose to become when life doesn’t go your way.

Football was taken from me, but my purpose wasn’t. My story wasn’t over. And neither is yours—no matter what you’re facing right now.

We all go through moments where life hits us hard.
Maybe you’ve lost something.
Maybe a door closed that you thought would always be open.
Maybe you’re questioning what’s next.

But I’m standing here today to tell you this:

Your setback is not your ending—it’s your setup.

Everything I went through—from losing my mother, to rebuilding my life, to losing the game I loved—taught me how to persevere. It taught me how to keep going when things don’t make sense. It taught me that strength isn’t about what you avoid—it’s about what you overcome.

So whatever you’re dealing with right now, don’t quit.
Don’t fold.
Don’t let one chapter decide your whole story.

Because greatness isn’t built when things are easy.
Greatness is built when everything is telling you to stop… and you keep going anyway.

I am not defined by what happened to me.
I am defined by how I responded to it.

And you have that same power.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has not always been smooth. In business, you have to be prepared for both the highs and the lows. I’ve focused on staying levelheaded—never getting too high when things are going well and never too low when challenges arise.

I launched my agency in May 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a difficult time on many fronts, with so many unknowns. While building my business, I was also helping clients navigate their own challenges—protecting their assets while facing health concerns, job loss, and, for many, the loss of loved ones.

Through it all, I’ve held onto the belief that tomorrow can be a brighter day. Those obstacles pushed me to become not just a better business owner, but a more compassionate one. Starting my agency during such a challenging time reinforced the importance of putting people before profits.

Showing clients that you genuinely care about their well-being is one of the most rewarding aspects of being an insurance agent.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
In 2015, I returned to the Cincinnati area and began working independently, selling property, casualty, and life insurance. Transitioning back and building a business from the ground up was challenging, but it strengthened my entrepreneurial mindset and commitment to serving clients.

In 2020, I was recruited by Shelter Mutual Insurance Company and offered the opportunity to establish my own agency through their program. I accepted and became a captive agent, founding DWAYNE HUTNER INSURANCE AGENCY LLC.

Shelter Mutual was honored by Forbes 2024 Number 1 in Auto Insurance. Shelter is honored to be the World’s Best Auto Insurance Companies! We offer Auto, Home, Life, as well as small business Insurance. We are a full service agency.

Since partnering with Shelter, I have earned several honors, including the Ohio Catalyst Award in 2021, 2022, and 2023. I was also recognized as Life Agent of the Year in 2024 and Personal Lines Agent of the Year for District 84 in 2025.

My agency’s mission is to provide a full range of insurance services to every client we serve. What sets us apart is our commitment to accessibility—our clients always have an agent they can speak with, whether in person or over the phone. We take a personalized approach, ensuring that each client’s unique needs are understood and properly addressed.

How do you think about happiness?
What brings me the most happiness is spending time with my family, traveling, and being in nature. These moments allow me to reconnect—with myself and with what truly matters. They create a sense of alignment between my mind and body that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Family grounds me. It reminds me of where I come from, the love that shaped me, and the strength that continues to carry me forward.

Nature, on the other hand, restores me. It gives me peace, clarity, and perspective in a world that can often feel overwhelming.

I’ve come to believe that both—family and a connection to nature—are essential to true health and happiness. They aren’t luxuries; they are necessities for living a balanced and meaningful life.
