Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Sherman.
Hi Andrea, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a working mom of three with a full-time career, and much of my life revolves around supporting my kids—whether that’s coaching their sports teams or keeping up with their many activities. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit and knew I wanted to start my own business someday, but like many busy parents, I wasn’t sure when I’d realistically find the time or what the right idea would be.
That changed last year when my twin daughters and I had fairy hair installed. I was immediately intrigued—not just by the results, which were beautiful and long-lasting—but by the simplicity and potential of the business itself. For weeks afterward, people kept asking where we had it done, and I found myself telling friends, “This would be such a fun business—you should do it.” At some point, I realized… why not me?
From there, I fully committed. I spent several months building my brand, refining my technique, and focusing on delivering a high-quality, elevated version of the experience. I officially launched in August 2025, and since then, I’ve had the opportunity to participate in events, connect with so many wonderful people, and create something that brings a little extra confidence and joy to others.
It’s been incredibly rewarding to build something of my own alongside a full and busy life—and I’m just getting started.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The hardest part has been time. Between my full-time job and my kids’ schedules, I don’t have many evenings or weekends to dedicate to events or marketing. I’ve leaned a lot on word of mouth and social media, and I’ll be honest—that alone can feel like a full-time job. It’s been a bigger lift than I expected, but I’m learning as I go.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Strands that Slay is a luxury hair tinsel service, also known as fairy hair, designed to add a subtle glow or a bold statement—depending on what the client is looking for. I specialize in a precise installation method using a fine crochet hook to attach each strand to a single piece of hair, which allows for a seamless, natural look.
What really sets my service apart is that I don’t use clips or beads. The strands are individually tied in, so they blend beautifully with your natural hair and move just like it. The tinsel I use is high-quality and heat-resistant, so clients can brush, style, and use hot tools without worry. The results are quick to achieve and can last anywhere from several weeks to a few months, depending on hair type and care.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about our city is the diversity and the different cultures that come together here. There’s a real sense of community—people genuinely show up for one another, especially in times of need. I also enjoy volunteering when I can, and being in different parts of the city has given me such a broader perspective. Each experience feels unique and has shaped how I see both the community and my place within it.
Honestly, there’s not much I don’t enjoy, but if I had to pick something, it would probably be traffic. That said, since I work from home, it doesn’t impact me as much day to day. It’s a small trade-off for everything else the city offers.
