Daily Inspiration: Meet Nicole Barille

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Barille.

Nicole, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Sam and I met in high school, but it wasn’t until after we graduated from college that we began playing as a two piece. We put our first EP out in 2005 and started touring the following year. Since then we started our own record label, El Marko Records, and have released two EPs, five full-length albums and have toured the country for over a decade. We’ve had to take the last few years off of touring after the birth of our son, but we’re currently in the middle of wrapping up our sixth album and gearing up to get back on the road again.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Well, we’re musicians so the whole business is a struggle! But that’s what keeps life interesting! We’ve been lucky enough to build an amazing fan base that has shown us so much support and love, and have met some incredible folks in the industry and on the road who have been by our side for so long now. There are always ups and downs though, and you have to be strong and committed to what you’re doing in order to keep moving forward.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are an indie art-rock, psychedelic two-piece band. We are a completely in-house DIY operation. We run our own record label, we do all of our own recording, artwork, photography and music videos. We like to think of ourselves more as multimedia artists who make music. We’re very proud of the fact that we started mr. Gnome almost 20 years ago and we’re still goin’ at it today! It’s been a crazy ride, but an amazing one as well.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
When we decided that we were going to be fully committed to mr. Gnome, we both quit full time jobs, moved out of our house and headed out West to couch surf, live in our van and record our very first album. I think this is when the panic attacks started! Haha! It was a huge risk to ditch our former lives, but we knew deep down that we had to do it. The people we’ve met, the connections we’ve made with our fans, seeing the entire country again and again, making music for a living, it’s all been worth it and I’m so happy to have taken that first leap so long ago!
