Today we’d like to introduce you to Moe & Kevin Dougherty.
Hi Moe & Kevin, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Originally from Ohio, Kevin and I first met in Lakewood back in late 2007 and we had big dreams back then that had nothing to do with plants, flowers, or thrifting! I had big dreams to be in the medical field and Kevin had big dreams of advancing his online business. We married in 2010 and welcomed our son in 2016, however between that time a lot happened!
In 2014, I was accepted into my dream Physician Assistant program in Portland, Oregon. Kevin and I moved out to Oregon to pursue my dreams and unfortunately, we were only there a total of two years. Sadly, I got severely sick while I was in my graduate program and I had to withdraw in 2015. Then in 2016, we were surprised with my pregnancy and decided to move back home to Ohio to be closer to family and friends.
It was then in early 2017 when our son was just a baby that I had the idea to start our Instagram blog and we decided to name it Rustic Details. We were in the stage of transitioning into the parental role in our lives and I was really looking for a creative outlet. At first, it started out with me posting ideas for decorating the house with various thrifted items and it has transformed into a platform for us to showcase our home garden finds as well as our thrift finds and home improvements, etc!
I continued posting on Rustic Details all through these years, hoping that something fun might happen with it one day. It is our dream now to hopefully one day find some land and continue with planting more and more flowers so that we can share the beauty with our community and help benefit the mental health of those around us!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been an easy road for us. I have had a lot of health issues since my early twenties and we have been to so many doctors over the years and we have spent tens of thousands of dollars on trying to figure out my health. It has been a long journey, that is for sure!
Shortly after Finn was born in August of 2016, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2017 and then in 2018, I was diagnosed with Late-Stage Lyme disease. Answers finally came but these were complex health issues to deal with in our life. Multiple medications were prescribed with many side effects and it has been years of pain and agony that we have worked through together.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We create beautiful flower bouquets and botanical illustrations inspired by our garden for personal use right now but we hope to sell locally within the next few years!
Most proud of our son, Finn, he motivates and inspires us to keep going each and every day!
What sets us apart is our love and desire to help those who suffer with mental illness. We would love to have a full-time business in the future that also aids those individuals in our community.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
We have not found a mentor per se, but we have been successful with networking on Instagram and in our close community! We have found a lot of people on the platform and we have made several friends who are working hard to make their communities healthy and beautiful as well!
