Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry Kennon.
Hi Larry, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always lived at the intersection of creativity and community. I grew up in Centerville, Ohio, where marching band, drumline, and choir shaped my identity early on. That foundation led me to Wright State University, where I earned a degree in Music Education — and eventually into a teaching career that’s become my calling.
Since 2014, I’ve served as the Arts Department Head and Director of Bands at Troy Christian Schools, leading ensembles across grades 5–12. I’ve built everything from marching and jazz bands to private lesson studios, and have brought in guest artists and partnerships with incredible organizations like the Dayton Philharmonic, The Ohio State University Marching Band, and even pro teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Cincinnati Reds. In 2024 and 2025, I was honored to receive Grammy nominations for Music Educator of the Year — a humbling affirmation of the heart I pour into my students.
Alongside teaching, I’ve always had a parallel creative lane. I started DJing in 2010 as a club kid with a deep love for setting the vibe. That led to early residencies at Club Masque, Hammerjaxx, and Bar Louie, and has since grown into a dynamic DJ career rooted in intentional sets, curated events, and musical storytelling.
In 2020, I launched Opehio Clothing, a Dayton-rooted apparel brand that blends nostalgia and Midwest pride through bold, thoughtful design. It’s a natural extension of everything I do — celebrating culture, shaping identity, and building meaningful experiences.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road — but I wouldn’t change it.
One of my biggest challenges was finishing my degree. It took me ten years to earn my bachelor’s in music education. Early on, I was in the wrong head and heart space — distracted, unsettled, and unsure of who I was or what I was meant to do. I was drifting without direction.
Everything changed when I found the Lord. My faith gave me clarity, discipline, and purpose. It grounded me and helped me realign with who I was created to be. Proverbs 3:5–6 became the foundation of how I live and work: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” That truth reshaped everything.
The road hasn’t been perfect, but it’s been clear. I’ve learned to move with purpose, to be faithful in the small things, and to keep showing up — even when the process is slow.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work spans a few different worlds — but they’re all connected by creativity, care, and intentionality.
By day, I serve as the Arts Department Head and Director of Bands at Troy Christian Schools, teaching grades 5–12. I lead everything from beginner band and marching band to jazz, drumline, and private lessons. I’ve built our program from the ground up, bringing in guest artists, partnering with professional ensembles, and creating opportunities for students to perform on major stages — including NBA and MLB games. I’ve been honored to receive Grammy nominations for Music Educator of the Year, but what I’m most proud of is the culture we’ve created: one that helps students grow not just as musicians, but as people.
Outside the classroom, I perform as DJ OhK, curating intentional, elevated events focused on energy, storytelling, and atmosphere. Whether it’s a rooftop, lounge, private party, or creative collaboration, I bring the same level of purpose and presence to every set.
I also run Opehio Clothing, a Dayton-based apparel brand that celebrates Midwest pride and nostalgic identity through bold, community-rooted design. Whether it’s a tee, a track, or a band performance — I’m always working to create experiences that resonate and last.
What sets me apart is the balance. I live in the overlap of art and service — blending education, music, design, and entrepreneurship with heart and focus.
And through it all, my family is at the center. My wife, Mackenzie, our soon-to-be daughter Neely, and our cat Zildjian are my greatest joys and constant reminder of what truly matters.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I’ve been incredibly blessed to have mentors and supporters who’ve shaped my journey — not just professionally, but personally.
Jerry Noble, my percussion professor at Wright State, played a major role in my musical, professional, and personal growth. Wayne Markworth, former Director of Bands at Centerville High School, has been a guiding force in how I approach teaching, leadership, and program-building. And Tim Fairbanks helped shape my percussion skill set and artistic discipline early on.
My mom was one of my earliest and most important mentors — both in music and education — and she taught me to chase my dreams with courage and conviction. My family as a whole has been a rock: their steady belief, support, and encouragement have carried me through every chapter of life and work.
I’m also incredibly grateful for my colleagues and administration at Troy Christian Schools. They’re more than coworkers — they’re truly a family. Their trust and collaboration have played a huge role in the growth of our arts program.
And I can’t say enough about my students — I absolutely adore them. They inspire me every day, keep me grounded, and constantly remind me why I chose this path. The same goes for our band families — their kindness, encouragement, and behind-the-scenes support make everything we do possible.
On the creative side, I want to thank Aaron Gosser, owner of Sqege Design, who handles all the printing for Opehio Clothing. He’s more than a print partner — he understands the vision and brings it to life with incredible care and quality.
I’m also thankful for the DJ community — fellow DJs and creatives who’ve challenged me, sharpened my sound, and encouraged growth every step of the way.
And most importantly, my wife, Mackenzie. She’s been patient through every idea, every pivot, every late-night brainstorm. Her belief in me makes all of this possible.
