Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Lanyo.
Hi Joseph, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started releasing music a couple years ago and it has been a journey. Currently I’ve been on a little bit of a hiatus finding myself and growing, so the music I make next is just as much a part of me as what I’ve what I’ve done.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road because I’m an independent musician having to juggle the multiple hats by myself. It has been a really rewarding learning experience; Aspects such as songwriting, managing the label, figuring out when to release as well as devising strategies around that take time and focus. Then the creative process of deciding when and what music videos will be made adds another piece of the puzzle that is being an artist. I’m honored to be humbled by the adventure that is being an independent musician as there has been so much to overcome.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make Afrobeat music. The number one growing genre in the world. I specialize in making music that allows you to escape from the mundane of every day and feel alive for a moment. I want to be known especially for making positive, profound music that is felt everywhere. The world is so cold and grey, I aim for my music to be an escape from the mundane, and feel as if sunshine is on your skin and life is good, even if just for a moment. My proudest achievement is having the discernment to ascertain that being an artist is not a race but a marathon, as when I stay true to myself I understand that there is a difference musical success rather than financial success. While I may not be where I want to be yet, that does not discredit what I’ve done and all I will do. I’m proud of taking the time to figure things out by myself, as the process has helped me to not discredit where I’m at as I’ve taken a hiatus, and will be back.
How do you define success?
Being able to live within your purpose and make a living from it. Waking up everyday and working toward your dreams, that to me is success. I do not believe success is a finish line, as it looks different to everyone. However, as long as you are getting up and working towards what you strive for everyday, you are on your way to success, which is success itself. It’s not going to be easy, but having that discipline and willpower to carve out the work you do each day takes you closer to the success you’re working for.
