Today we’d like to introduce you to Bambi McClone.
Hi Bambi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be a hairstylist. But I decided to go to college for Criminal Justice and Psychology instead. After college I stayed in corporate world for a number of years before realizing at 34, I still had that fire and passion pushing me toward this industry. So I decided to start over and go to cosmetology school. I was the oldest person in my class, but I also had years of workforce experience. Once I got my license I knew I had no limits. I out in my time assisting and continued to take more education. As my behind the chair experience started to flourish, I also became a Redken Artist, which would allow me to travel the country and educate stylists in salons everywhere. There is something so beautiful about connecting with other creatives and providing a learning space that is safe and free of judgment. About 6.5 years ago I decided to leave the commission salon I had been at for about 4.5 years and move into a suite. I loved being able to provide high end services in a private environment, especially during the pandemic. My time in my suite was everything I needed it to be, for as long as it should. But in the beginning of 2025, my suitemate, Leslie Roach and I decided to start looking at spaces where we could expand. We definitely found some interesting spots, but nothing felt quite right. Until we walked in the octagon building at 219 N Main St in Hudson. The energy wrapped around us like a vine! Instantly we knew this was our place. So we got the keys and started the work to make a space that was designed for the stylist experience. Too often the service providers and their needs fall to the bottom of the priority list. We know that when the stylist is appreciated, and well taken care of, then they can provide an amazing experience to their guests. When you walk into Foil Hair Co. you can feel the energy and the intention.
It’s wild to think back to 34 year old Bambi on day one of beauty school. She had big dreams. She knew it would take years of hard work and education and experience. But every single thing led to this.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Coming into an industry that revolves around showcasing each persons individual beauty can be intimidating. Especially as a person who never quite fit in. I’ve always been the quirky one. And what use to be an insecurity, has now become a super power. Individuality is what makes us all perfect. Imposter syndrome is very real, until you stand right in front of it and take away the power.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have always loved a challenge. Special Event and Editorial styling is something I will always have an intense passion for. And as a hairstylist who specializes in color and haircolor correction, I really enjoy being able to take any canvas and create something for someone that makes them feel more like themselves than they ever have. It’s not about duplicating an inspiration photo. It’s about taking what the guest likes and customizing it to their exact canvas. I am so proud of the many years of extended education and I will continue to evolve. I think what sets me apart is that while I know I am very good at what I do, there will always be someone better than me that I can learn more from. I will never consider myself to be the best/smartest person in the room. If that happens, I’m in the wrong room.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I try to stay as organized as possible with all of the different avenues in my career. So apps like TurboScan, Vagaro, CapCut, all help me stay creative but in an organized manner.
I listen to a lot of podcasts: The Gina Bianca Podcast, Call Her Daddy, Six Figure Stylist. I was a guest on that a few years ago. I also read a good amount of books, currently: Made to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath. Like I said, it’s a constant evolution and I refuse to become stagnant.
