Conversations with Freshie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Freshie.

Hi Freshie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Freshie and I’m an artist. My story started with my mom. She used to rap before she got pregnant with me at sixteen. She met Michael Jackson and Will Smith, and as I grew older, I realized who these people were. I always wanted to meet Michael Jackson, that’s my favorite artist. It inspired me to make music instantly. I also used to get in trouble a lot as a kid. One of my friends brought a gun to school and we both got in trouble for it, even though it was his gun. This one time I got in trouble in third grade for cussing. The principal gave me an ultimatum; get in trouble or make a song. I chose to make music…and it’s been a journey ever since. I got where I am today by just staying with it for real. I just kept going– never stopped or gave up. Ever since I was a kid, as long as I could remember I just knew where I wanted to be and where I’m trying to go.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If anyone said that they were lying! Being African American and dealing with poverty, wasn’t easy at all. Not even the struggles of being an artist but the struggles of being a young, black, African American man. I had to come from lights being off, no food, having to eat rice and beans, and then go to school like nothing was wrong. That was probably the most difficult part of it. Becoming a man and an artist at the same time. Just trying to figure it out; the process of just figuring it out. It’s been a struggle, we’re still struggling, we’re just making it work.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an artist and model, and now I’m an actor. I specialize in leadership and motivation. I’m most known for rapping and being fly. I’m most proud of my team and my brand. I’m also proud of my ability to think critically. My work ethic and musical background is what sets me apart from others. I’ve just always been in love with the music. I also have a sense of the concept of “ego death”. I don’t operate from my ego or pride; that’s what sets me apart too.

What do you think about luck?
I really don’t too much believe in luck. I just believe in blessings, Ya know? I guess if you want to call it luck, then a lot of luck has played a role, just being able to be in a position to make a living off doing what I want to do in life. Having people help me believe in me, that’s all luck in itself. I feel like I’m a pretty lucky guy.
