Community Highlights: Meet Shelby Van Weelden of Shelby Van Weelden – Realtor and Career Development Lead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Van Weelden.

Hi Shelby, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved seeing homes, but I didn’t really think of being a realtor as a possible career option until I moved to Northern Kentucky. When my fiancé and I bought our house a couple of years ago we used a Pivot agent, and he just made the process fun and easy for us and I wanted to do that too. I wanted to make a positive difference in peoples’ lives, I wanted to have fun at work, I wanted to get to see the world during the day instead of being cooped up in an office for 8 hours, and I wanted the opportunity to make great money without limitations. I’m really happy that I decided to make the career change because I’ve gotten to meet so many great people and I’ve learned so much from working at Pivot. I have so much fun here and I love the company so much that I also accepted the opportunity to be a Career Development Lead, so I get to help bring more great people into our culture!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a realtor is definitely challenging, especially since it relies heavily on your connections and social media presence. I moved here from out of state a couple of years ago, so I didn’t really have much of a sphere to lean on to help me grow my business. On top of that, there’s always some level of a learning curve with any new job but I think there’s a little more weight to being a realtor because you’re responsible for helping someone through one of the biggest financial decisions of their life and I was terrified that I was going to mess that up for a client. I give a lot of credit to my fiancé and my coach, Lori, for where I am with my business today though. I tend to be hard on myself and they were always incredibly supportive and encouraging, and Lori was especially patient, so it was really nice to have someone rooting in my corner on the good and the bad days.

As you know, we’re big fans of Shelby Van Weelden – Realtor and Career Development Lead. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I’m a licensed Realtor for Kentucky and Ohio and I work with a lot of first-time home buyers. I believe that in anything you do, you should give it your all so that when you walk away from it you can look back and be proud of what you’ve done. I think that if someone is going to come to you, to put their trust in you, to help them through a very emotional and stressful time in their life then you should genuinely care about what you’re doing and try your best to just be a good person. I’m really fortunate to be part of Pivot because that is what the company is all about and it’s great knowing that I work with a bunch of other agents that aren’t just in it for a paycheck! #WeCanBecauseWeCare I’m also a Career Development Lead for Pivot, so I get to talk with people about starting a career in Real Estate. We want what’s best for anyone considering getting licensed, so we have very honest conversations about how challenging and rewarding the work is. I love having the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life while making an impact on the growth of the company.

We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking?
Life requires a little bit of risk. I’m not saying that you have to go out and fight a shark, but there are no opportunities in staying in your comfort zone. Any risk that I take is going to be one that I thought about and weighed the options on because I don’t fancy myself as a real risk-taker but I also don’t think that makes it any less of a risk. You just never know what might come from making one small move that’s outside your comfort zone. My example would be that I joined Tinder, it was a small thing that’s not a big deal to most people but it led me to meet my fiancé, move away from all of my family to Kentucky to be with him, and live the most incredible life that I never in a million years thought that I’d have. There are so many great opportunities just waiting for you outside of your comfort zone, you have to just have a little bit of confidence in your ability to handle anything that comes your way.
