Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Dearing.
Hi Michael, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We opened Dad’s Coneys and Wraps in August of 2021 as Covid restrictions were being lowered and people we ready to venture out. We started with the belief that we could avoid the pitfalls of a new startup. Four years later, we have experienced more of the pitfalls than I would care to admit. Over time, we have updated the menu and removed items that just aren’t desired by people today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
MARKETING!!!! That’s been our biggest challenge. Just getting the word out that we are here and what we have to offer.
Staffing has been our second greatest challenge. After Covid, so many people don’t really want to work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Our focus is coneys and wraps. Over time and with customer requests, we expanded the menu to include fried and grilled chicken sandwiches, Dad’s Cheeseburger and Son of Cheeseburger, A wider selection of coney dog variations, corndogs, fish sandwiches, a chicken bacon ranch wrap that is out of this world. Recently, we have added a Philly cheesesteak wrap and a sandwich. We make most of our side dishes inhouse using family recipes.
How do you define success?
Success boils down to serving quality food in a welcoming environment that prompts people to tell their friends about us. Many people would define success by the numbers but to me, having happy customers and being able to pay our staff a wage they can live on as well as being able to pay the store bills is success. Sure, I want more customers which means more sales which may put us in a position to expand someday.
