Community Highlights: Meet Lashawn Williams of Fat Shawn’s Turkey Jerkys

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lashawn Williams.

Hi Lashawn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Well, I take it back to 1999-2000 my dad made jerky and sold it to his coworkers at his job. So, he worked 2nd shift so they usually get off at 1130pm. So, when he get home from work, he would make the jerky and my room was just on the other side of the wall so I always got woke up hearing him make the jerky. So, I notice that he would be up hours after getting home from work and making jerky so I figured if I learn how to do the jerky, I could just make them when I got home from school at 3:30 and it would take a load off of him. So, he teaches me how to make them and I got good at it (I was always in the kitchen anyway so why not lol). I stopped making them some years after he taught me, I was growing up and strayed away from making the jerky. Fast forward to 2017 I had a conversation with my dad and he stated that he had a 50-bag order from his job and in my head, I was like that’s a lot of orders. That conversation right there flipped the switch in my head like I want to see how it would go if I did my own thing with the jerky, I already had the knowledge on how to make them. So, I start making them but instead of using beef like my dad was I decided to see how the turkey would do and man was that the best decision for me to do that. Initially, when I first started back in 2017, I was making them and selling them just to have gas in my car but as I promoted on social media and word of mouth got around the orders were coming in more and more. So, 2018 is when the name Fat Shawn’s Turkey Jerkys came about and that’s when I got my LLC and I’ve been going nonstop ever since. Now I have a great amount of customers and looking forward to gaining more. I ship nationwide I shipped to a lot of cities and states the one that shocked me the most was someone ordering from Hawaii that was mind-blowing. With the support of my wife Binky (she hates her real name) my 2 kids (Lj and Josh) my niece Aaliyah and nephew Jaheim and my family, I’m looking to make Fat Shawn’s Turkey Jerkys the best jerky you can buy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
From the beginning, the biggest challenge for me was actually building up my confidence to talk to people about my brand and trying to convince them that my product was good. Along with a lot of research and late nights and early mornings constantly being told that “I’m fine I don’t eat jerky” was discouraging and at times I felt like giving up. I feel like I still face obstacles/challenges to this day. I faced about of obstacles and challenges throughout this journey but somehow, I never give up I remain grounded and push through it. I want to say ever since I met a guy by the name of Micheal Jett I’ve learned so much about business and the food industry he’s introduced me to a lot of great important people that’s in the food industry I’m forever grateful for him. A lot of the challenges I was facing he already knew the direction to point me to soon as I told him what was going on.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Fat Shawn’s Turkey Jerkys est February 7, 2018. Before we end this interview, I have to state that Fat Shawn’s Turkey Jerkys is not your typical jerky not only does it taste good but it’s so tender and you won’t be chewing for a week trying to consume it. We have 3 flavors as of now Hot Mild and Cincinnati BBQ we are looking to add more flavors as well and we are working on creating a vegan jerky as well.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was raised in a household where we were a tight-knit family it was my mom and dad and my 3 siblings (Tony the oldest Ray the second oldster Me then my sister Brianna she the last of us. My inspiration to get in the kitchen was my grandma Dolly I used to always watch her cook and ask to help because I knew she would let me be a taste tester lol. But she taught me a lot in the kitchen and then I struck an interest in baking cakes and my grandma Shirley taught me how to make pound cakes. But it wasn’t until my mom got sick one year that I put all I’ve learned in the kitchen to use she taught me how to do the laundry and I picked up the load when she got sick, I used to be young cooking dinner and laundry for us until she got better. Growing up I was surrounded by a lot of love from my family.
