Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Kombe
Hi Karen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hello, my name is Karen Kombe. While it may seem like my story is unique, it’s actually quite relatable. I’ve always had a deep interest in childbirth, which inspired me to study nursing in college. My dream was to become a labor and delivery nurse, but unfortunately, that dream didn’t come to fruition.
Instead of letting that discourage me, I asked myself, “What else can I do to support women during childbirth?” As I explored my options, I discovered the role of a doula—a supportive figure who assists mothers emotionally, physically, and with information, but without performing clinical tasks. This discovery led me to create Amani Doula, a service dedicated to supporting women throughout their birth journey.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
So far, there have been some challenges along the way. One of the biggest struggles I’ve faced is believing in myself and overcoming the fear that holds me back from fully supporting mothers. This has been my greatest obstacle since I began. As a naturally introverted person, putting myself out there can be tough. My goal moving forward is to attend networking events and connect with other doulas to learn how they navigate similar challenges.

Amani Doula provides compassionate birth doula services, offering comprehensive support to expectant mothers throughout pregnancy and childbirth. Our services cover physical, emotional, and informational support to ensure a positive birthing experience. We offer two packages to meet varying needs: the Birth Package, which includes two prenatal visits, continuous labor support, and a postpartum follow-up; and the Labor Package, which provides labor support along with a postpartum visit. All services are personalized to suit the mother’s preferences and birth setting, whether at home or in the hospital.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned on my journey is the deep fulfillment that comes from supporting mothers during childbirth, and the joy they experience when they finally hold their baby.
