Community Highlights: Meet Amber Williams of ScentsXchange

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Williams.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started ScentsXchange five years ago after starting my first Human Resources position and realizing it wasn’t a good fit. I was enrolling in grad school, balancing being a single mom, and making next to nothing. I found myself overwhelmed, overworked, and overstressed.

As you could probably imagine, I never made time for myself. And to be honest, I didn’t even know how to make time for myself or what self-care looked like. I just knew that I was stressed. And I was tired. It’s not until I realized that taking care of myself was the solution to my problem – and what’s crazy is that it didn’t take any extra time.

I developed a line of all-natural self-care products that relieve stress, provide relaxation, and improve your quality of sleep. I also help high-performing women to create a lifestyle that they don’t have to vacation from.

After starting ScentsXchange, I quickly became the expert in self-care and I’m not only able to provide luxury products to my customers, but I am also able to teach them how to maximize their self-care so that they’re operating in it at its full capacity.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Getting to where I am today has not been a smooth road. Some of the struggles I’ve dealt with along the way were time management, consistency, and building organic traffic. Running a company isn’t easy especially when you are a parent and working a corporate job. All of my challenges tied together, but everything started with time management. Once I was able to get that under control, the rest fell into place.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I would have to say that I am proud of my company’s success as I built it from nothing while working full-time, being a single parent, and attending grad school full-time. I am able to provide high-quality products and luxury experiences to my customers. I don’t just have a candle company. I am able to provide my customers with a whole self-care experience while also producing products they can use to create a lifestyle that they don’t have to vacation from.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Finding a mentor can be hard, especially with the way social media doesn’t tell all the details. Just like anything in business you have to do your research. You can’t work with someone just because they look good on social or because your friend does. Everyone has different needs and connections. Doing your research will allow you to find the true value in that person and if they can indeed offer what you need. If they are aligned with your mission and values then try it out. Business is trial and error and you can’t be afraid to fail because it will happen. Keep in mind that a mentor is to help and guide you, but you still have to do the work.
