Check Out Kelly Boyd’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Boyd.

Hi Kelly, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Like most people, I was at home during COVID searching for a new at hobby. I knew four years ago I wanted to start my own business, but I always talked myself out of it because it wasn’t the right “season of life.” Come 2020, finding the right niche that would involve my passion and interests led me to apply for a vendor’s license, work with a graphic designer on a logo, and bam! My business was started.

I had purchased one indoor plant—a rattlesnake calathea and my love for learning about houseplants grew. I loved learning about the health benefits and biophilic design.

Our roots were built on selling easy-care houseplants that we could help people maintain in their own homes— as well as offer nature-inspired home decor pieces.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To be honest, I was lost when I first started. I didn’t know which licenses I needed to purchase— I didn’t know much about owning a business except for my experience in running a classroom full of kindergartners!

Thankfully, I met some pretty amazing women and other entrepreneur moms who helped me along the way. I figured out some logistics of owning and operating and business and found local markets to launch at!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
After being a vendor at markets last year, our customers kept asking the same question… “where is your store located?” I knew after hearing this several times that people were enjoying what we had to offer. We saw 20% or higher returning customers. They would bring their friends to shop with us too. It meant the world that our customers believed in us. It’s what kept us going and what led us to decide to open our first brick-and-mortar store.

Roots HomeStore offers a curated collection of home goods, decor, and easy-care houseplants that are inspired by nature and natural elements. Our neutral pallets and subtle textures create a calming environment for any home style.

Our store will be staged into different showrooms so our customers can visualize how it could be styled in their own homes. I am a visual person, so our aesthetic is very important to me. My goal is for our customers to enter our showroom and instantly feel at home.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice would be to go outside your comfort zone. Ask questions. A lot of questions. Small business owners support small business owners. We are all rooting for each other. Don’t be afraid to take chances. I reached out to people on social media—whom I had never met in person—and just went for it. It can be intimidating, but in the long run, I’m so thankful because I met so many amazing humans through the process.
