Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Regas And Alyx Mcquilkin Co Founders
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We met while working at Boulevard Elementary in Cleveland Heights,Ohio and quickly hit it off as friends. Alyx had experience working primarily with high school-aged students as an intervention specialist and also volunteered at GiGi’s Playhouse as a program lead for one of their adult music programs. Kate had always been an elementary intervention specialist but was deeply passionate about the transition and adult age. Together, we decided to take a bold step forward, close the classroom doors, and open an adult day program.
We saw an immense need in Cleveland, Ohio, for high-quality, purposeful, and engaging day programs for adults with developmental disabilities. We wanted to take everything we loved about teaching and pour it into a program that truly made a difference. Early on, we decided to make it a nonprofit organization because our mission aligned perfectly with the values of a nonprofit, and we believed the community would rally behind a new nonprofit committed to doing good.
At Do Good Day Hub, our mission is to empower individuals with developmental disabilities by providing opportunities to learn and grow. Through vocational training and volunteer programming, we aim to enrich our members’ lives and enhance the community as a whole. By fostering a supportive environment, our goal is to positively impact the lives of these individuals, their families, and the local community, promoting inclusivity and understanding.
That’s how The Hub was born—out of a shared passion for creating a space filled with engaging, community-centered activities that provide meaningful opportunities and empower the individuals we serve. It’s all about making a positive impact and living up to our mission to do good!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a fairly smooth road overall! We’ve approached everything step by step, breaking challenges into manageable parts whenever we felt unsure about the next move. Becoming an agency provider through the Department of Developmental Disabilities was one of the more strenuous tasks—it took much longer than expected and came with its own set of challenges. Despite the obstacles, we are incredibly grateful to have achieved agency provider status, as it allows us to better serve our members and their families.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Do Good Day Hub is an adult day program specializing in empowering adults with developmental disabilities through meaningful activities, skill-building, and community involvement. We bring years of classroom experience to The Hub. Both former intervention specialists, we have a deep passion for working with this population and are committed to ensuring each individual has a meaningful purpose.
Do Good Day Hub currently has partnerships with several organizations, with the ultimate goal of forming connections, building skills, giving back and having fun! Our current partners include Edwin’s Leadership and Restaurant, where we primarily work in their clothing closet and library; GiGi’s Playhouse, where we focus on a variety of vocational skills such as cleaning, organizing, sorting, and more; and the Coventry Village Community Fridge. Do Good Day Hub started the Coventry Village Community Fridge, a free pantry and fridge located within walking distance of our facility. We run and operate the fridge, contribute weekly meals prepared by our members, accept and sort donations, and clean and organize the space.
We are most proud of creating an inclusive space where our members feel valued and supported. What sets us apart is our small group size that focuses on individualized support, unique opportunities, and community connections.
What does success mean to you?
We measure success by our members’ happiness, growth, and engagement. Seeing them thrive in our routines, gain new skills, and form meaningful connections in the community is our ultimate reward.
