Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Kootstra.
Hi Jennifer, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I’m a military wife and I began my business when we had just moved to New Mexico in 2017. I had a busy toddler and had experienced a string of miscarriages that led me to start looking into potential disruptive or harmful toxins in my environment. Another military spouse and dear friend introduced me to the brand. I was hesitant to get involved with “one of those companies,” but Beautycounter stood out in the crowd for me, and I was intrigued. I signed up with my company thinking that it was worth giving a shot and at least I’d get a discount. I’ve never been “fast” at anything, but I’m not a quitter either. Since I had just moved to my new location and was meeting people for the first time, I was hesitant to bring up my business, and because of that lack confidence, it took me about 8 months before I was able to get going in my small community. Fast forward almost 5 years, I have a team of 13 and have organically and authentically grown my business by connecting with people personally, over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, while offering safer skincare, cosmetics, and body care solutions. I’m part of a supportive, intelligent, and loving community that has helped me to excel in personal growth and leadership more than I’ve experienced in any of my professional jobs. Our products are phenomenal, and a lovely customer service experience is the icing on top. After our move to Ohio, my confidence was in full swing, and I’m so excited to share all I have to offer with everyone in the Buckeye State!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes, lots of struggles. I definitely had to grow in confidence in my product and sales knowledge. I had to face fear and turn it into courage and set my feelings aside, and not take “no” personally. I don’t love to “recruit,” so building a team has not come fast for me. If I see something in someone and really think that they could benefit from the consultant opportunity or they have the type of personality that help people feel comfortable and able to connect, then I will reach out. The opportunity to grow with Beautycounter is significant and available to anyone that’s willing to give it a try.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Beautycounter is a clean personal care and cosmetic company out of Santa Monica, California. They are a mission-based company that provides high-quality and high-performing products that are safe for people and the planet. They are a certified B Corp that balances people, profit, and planet. Though we have several brick-and-mortar locations throughout the US, we feel our story is best-told person to person, and that’s what I do. What we do matters, and what I do contributes to that.
What does success mean to you?
To me, success is setting goals, working towards them diligently. I don’t find success in a title or paycheck (though, I love a good paycheck!) I love the community I’ve found, the people I meet, the connections I’ve made far and wide through my clients and teammates. I love the Les Brown quote, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it you will land among the stars.”
