Check Out Emmy Walker’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emmy Walker.

Hi Emmy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up in Cincinnati, I’ve had plenty of beautiful scenery surrounding me for stunning photography.

I have always loved photography from the time I could remember. Whether it be being behind the camera taking the photos or looking through my parent’s old photo albums, I was obsessed with all things photography. I would ask my family for a camera every single year for Christmas – I finally got my wish during my freshman year of college at The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). I would do photo sessions for my sorority sisters and bring my camera to sorority events. I even took my camera into an Ole Miss game and took pictures of players on the field. I learned a few weeks later that unless you are approved by the school, you can’t just bring your DSLR camera into an SEC sports event… whoops!

Over the years, I was asked to do photo sessions here and there. In the fall of 2021, my brother’s childhood best friend asked me to take pictures of his proposal to his now-fiancée. It instantly sparked the momentum in pursuing photography to the next level.

In November of 2021, I decided to finally turn my passion into a career and I formed Photos By Emmy, LLC!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I started my business from the ground up all by myself with lots of support from my husband, family, and friends. I started off very slow and slowly saved my money for a new camera, lenses, and photography equipment. It’s anything but cheap! I would get discouraged that I didn’t have professional-grade photography equipment, but eventually with patience and very hard work, I was able to purchase the necessary equipment to take my business exactly where it needs to go.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Cincinnati-based photographer for portraits, events, and more. Basically, anything under the sun except weddings (for now!). I’m most proud of taking the initiative of creating my own business – the scariest step in my opinion is making the leap and banking on yourself.

I pride myself upon being passionate for not only the photography itself but for my clients. You’ll see in every photo session I do, there’s heart. It’s as simple as that. I’m not a stuffy photographer trying to gain acclaim. I’m here to give you tangible memories that last a lifetime.

We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking?
I think about risk as taking that first step – like how I did when I first started this business. I put everything on the line to make this business not only work but make the framework with the goal to thrive. I had to take a chance on myself which was hands-down the scariest part about starting this business.

I’m so glad I took that risk – the risk was well worth the reward.
