Check Out Alexis Larsen’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Larsen.

Hi Alexis, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been a creative at heart with a deep love for business as well as community. Professionally I had spent years in the service industry playing every role from serving to management. I had a deep love for the connections I was able to make as well as the hospitality I was able to provide, taking someone’s experience to the next level was always my goal. When the pandemic hit, and my restaurant closed, I was determined to keep the creativity flowing! This began with renovating our pop-up camper (named Hygge); as that project came to a close, I decided there was no time like the present to begin launching a business my husband and I have spent years dreaming about. Ultimately our dreams are way bigger than where we currently stand, but on a whim and a $1,000 winning scratch-off ticket we bought our first tent! Our plans for a permanent glamp ground are still in the works, but this allowed us to begin by bringing the glamping to you! So, in March of 2021, when the world really needed safe, exciting experiences, we launched Hallowed Hygge (pronounced Hue-Guh). At that point, our focus was mostly glamping tents, the ability for families to gather in a space outside of their home that would bring connection, beauty, and a sense of JOY that was much needed in the midst of a global pandemic. We had a really fun first season in business and busted our butts to make each space unique, perfect for each occasion, and always bringing the WOW factor. Over the winter we got creative looking for ways to stay relevant in the midst of cold weather! We bought a wood-burning stove, a projector and partnered with Meza to offer charcuterie and a bottle of wine with each hourly rental! We have become no stranger to the “pivot”! Winter offered a very Hygge experience with candles lit, a roaring fire, and cozied up in a fuzzy blanket with your bestie or partner! It was fun to find ways to offer our experience in a different season, where we could have otherwise not done business at all! As we rolled into the spring and summer, we shifted our focus once more from glamping tents to lounge tents! While we are happy to accommodate glamping, it was clear that a majority of our inquiries were for events! We honed in on that and have had a very busy second season! We have booked a few weddings this season, as well as one for the summer of 2023! Our events this season have ranged from Coachella-themed birthdays to backyard family weekends, engagement parties, as well fun brunch events! We offer a range of services outside of just tents… packages that include charcuterie, coffee bars, brunch grazing boards, and mocktails in vintage glassware! It’s been a really exciting business and a beautiful ride of pivoting when necessary but keeping true to our core values of providing stunning spaces that allow you to unplug and unwind in the company of your favorite people!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think we ever imagined it would be a smooth road. But both my husband and I are committed to showing up and doing the “hard work” for things we deeply love. First and foremost, our greatest challenge in any business we run is our family. We are a foster family, and therefore our family life is ever evolving. This winter as we prepared for a big launch event, we were simultaneously picking up a newborn baby from the hospital does that say “challenging”? Learning to balance our family alongside of our rentals was one of our first challenges; this season we have intentionally held several weekends to invest in our children, and that has been a game changer. At the onset of winter, I found myself overwhelmed thinking about how to stay relevant during the cold season, it was great to have to flex our out-of-the-box muscles and take a chance on trying something new! Weather overall proves to be challenging at times (rain, storms, heavy wind) although to date we have yet to have it stop us from getting a tent up or down! We know walking into each season that there will be new challenges, and for me that is exciting! A way to continually grow and develop as an entrepreneur is important to me!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our main business if fully furnished bell tent rentals, designed and curated specifically with your event in mind. We love to make an event stand apart from the rest. To bring the wow factor and to be something guests walk away talking about. Our tents hold full-sized couches, grazing tables, projectors for movies and are always decorated and detailed to perfection. Our business in and of itself is a very unique offering and honestly sets us apart simply because of what it is! Our tents speak for themselves. They are beautiful without being furnished, but each detail pulls you in a little deeper. I am really proud overall to have accomplished everything we have. To stand out in an industry saturated with increasingly talented humans! Columbus is a hub of wildly creative business owners, and it has been a blessing and privilege to have worked alongside so many of them!

What matters most to you? Why?
I love this question because our why is so important to us. We are raising four kids and want to make sure that they know as well as our guests that values are incredibly important to us as we build this business. We named our business Hallowed Hygge (which is neither easy to remember nor pronounce) but what it stood for was more important to me than the marketing that I know all too well. Hallowed mean sacred ground or holy space, and Hygge means invoking or fostering a sense of coziness, contentment, or well-being. To us, creating spaces for others that are safe, inclusive, sacred, and foster a deep sense of connection are everything. When we leave each tent, we hope secrets, food, wine, and friendship are shared. We are a family who deeply values differences and inclusion and we want to foster that in our brand and our why. We want our spaces to provide a sense of openness, beauty, and human connection.
