Today we’d like to introduce you to River Galentin.
Hi River, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I found my love for photography when I was in middle school. Everything started with my great appreciation for nature, and I took photos of flowers and trees on my phone all of the time. A few years back, I was gifted my first camera, a Nikon D90, and that got me going. I ended up taking senior photos for a couple friends of mine, and kept taking photos of nature. I had been saving up money, so I upgraded to my Canon R5 and got to do couple photos for a coworker of mine. I did a couple free photoshoots, and realized I had a lot more work to do to make this my full time job. Since then, I’ve been active on social media and I talk about photography whenever I’m able to. My clientele continues to grow, and I couldn’t be more grateful.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has not been easy. I’ve encountered many obstacles that I’ve had to battle to overcome. For a long time, nobody took me seriously with my business. Part of that was warranted, as it takes some time to be professional and run things smoothly, but some of it was really discouraging. The only reason I didn’t start taking my own business seriously for so long is because some of the people around me didn’t believe it was in the cards for me. That’s had an impact on me internally, and I catch myself falling into the trap of comparison, as so many photographers and business owners do. However, my dad, my step mom, my best friend, and my boyfriend have all been the most supportive in this last year. I couldn’t be more grateful for the 4 of continuously pushing me to be my best and reassure me that I’m doing great.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
For the most part, I’m a portrait and nature photographer. I’ve done a little bit of concert photography over the past year, but it’s difficult to manage fitting it into my schedule because I have to prioritize booking paid clients. I’m still in the process of building clientele, and likely will be for some time, but my goal for my business is to focus on my couples, and continue updating my print shop for all of my nature photography. I do all of my sessions outdoors, as that’s what inspired me to begin with. I’m a very down to earth person, and I take pride in respecting our land and doing what I can to protect it while appreciating it. I also prioritize being accepting of all people in my business. As a person who is in thr LGBTQIA+ community myself, I understand how important this is. My passion for photography is fueled by the wonders of Mother Earth, and music. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the things i’ve gotten to experience, and am so proud of what I’ve accomplished in the last year. I know that my story is not over, and there’s so much more to come.
What are your plans for the future?
Right now, I simply plan to grow my clientele. I have relocate my business to a different in the future, but I don’t have a set time frame for that. For now, I just want to grow my business into what I know it can be, and take care of myself.
