Conversations with Megan Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Mitchell.

Hi Megan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up with a mom who cherishes memories more than anything and always had a camera ready to snap photos whether it was family Christmas or us playing in the kiddie pool. When I was in elementary school I won my first digital camera from a raffle and took it everywhere with me. I usually had some kind of camera or camcorder on my Christmas list. I loved snapping photos and taking silly videos with my siblings and cousins.

When I had my first daughter in 2021, I bought my first digital camera in years to begin documenting her growing up. In November of 2021 I started offering model calls for couples and families which blossomed into a family photography side hustle. In the spring of 2022 my amazing wedding photographer took me under her wing and completely turned me onto weddings. I fell in love, and this year marks my fifth wedding season!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Balancing motherhood with business ownership has been my biggest challenge. It took me running my business for three years and having my second daughter in 2024 to finally take the plunge into photography full time.

Being a mother and being a business owner can be equally isolating experiences. You can feel like you are in the trenches of motherhood while drowning in business tasks. There are moments when I feel like I am never giving enough to my kids or to my clients. I’ve found that intentionally scheduling admin time and me time is essential to my health and happiness. I even went back to my yoga practice this year and will schedule fun model sessions just to fill my creative cup.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in true to color weddings and engagement sessions. I believe my engagement sessions are my secret sauce- each one is unique to each couple, their connection, and their story. I want every couple’s photos to feel natural, effortless, and easy like their love.

I most proud of my authenticity and creating a calmly guided experience. I am also a great anticipator of not only my couple’s needs but also the moments to be photographed.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was equal parts artsy and adventurous. I was either working on my newest craft obsession lile origami or climbing trees in the woods of my childhood home. I always had a strong interest in creativity and arts, especially performing arts. I was in colorguard, choir, and musical theater. I was always the quiet funny friend, slow to warm up but once you were my people I totally relaxed and let my humor loose.
