Today we’d like to introduce you to Colleen Hess.
Hi Colleen , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my career in healthcare as a dental hygienist, where I spent years working closely with patients and developing a strong foundation in precision, attention to detail, and client care. While I loved building relationships and helping people feel confident in their smiles, I always felt pulled toward something more creative and entrepreneurial.
That’s what led me to permanent makeup. I was drawn to the blend of artistry and technical skill, but more importantly, the impact it has on confidence and self-image. I made the decision to invest in training, education, and mentorship, and began building what is now The Opal Ink Studio.
Like many small business owners, the beginning was a mix of excitement and reality checks. I was balancing a full-time career while learning an entirely new craft, investing in myself, and slowly building a client base. It required a lot of discipline, patience, and belief in the long game.
Today, I specialize in services like brows, lip blush, and eyeliner—focusing on natural, customized results that enhance each client’s features rather than overpower them. I’m still actively growing, refining my skills, and expanding my offerings, but I’ve built a foundation I’m incredibly proud of.
What makes this journey meaningful to me is the transformation I get to be part of—not just physically, but emotionally. Seeing someone feel more confident when they look in the mirror is what continues to drive me forward.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—and honestly, I don’t think it’s supposed to be.
Starting a business from scratch while working full-time and learning an entirely new skill set was a huge challenge. There’s a significant financial investment upfront—training, equipment, supplies, ongoing education—and you’re putting that out before you’re consistently bringing money in. That part requires a lot of trust in yourself and the process.
On top of that, imposter syndrome is very real, especially in the beginning. You’re stepping into a new industry, building confidence in your work, and putting yourself out there publicly at the same time. There were moments where I questioned if I was ready—but I’ve learned that growth only happens when you’re willing to push through that discomfort.
Time management was another big hurdle. Balancing a full-time career with building The Opal Ink Studio meant long days, late nights, and being very disciplined with how I used my time.
But every challenge has shaped how I operate. I hold myself to an extremely high standard, I’m constantly refining my craft, and I don’t cut corners. I’m not interested in doing things quickly—I’m focused on doing them exceptionally well, and that’s what sets the foundation for long-term success.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m the founder and artist behind The Opal Ink Studio, where I specialize in permanent makeup services including brows, lip blush, and eyeliner. My focus is on creating soft, natural, and highly customized results that enhance each client’s features rather than overpower them.
What I’m known for—and what I prioritize in every appointment—is precision and intention. Every face is different, so I take the time to map, design, and choose techniques and pigments based on the individual, not a one-size-fits-all approach. My background in healthcare really shaped that attention to detail and level of care.
I’m also very focused on the overall client experience. From consultation to aftercare, I want clients to feel informed, comfortable, and confident every step of the way. This isn’t just a service—it’s a process, and I treat it that way.
What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me, especially being in the early stages of growing my business. Permanent makeup is very personal, and having someone choose you for something so visible and long-lasting is something I don’t take lightly.
What sets me apart is my commitment to quality and continued growth. I invest heavily in education, I’m constantly refining my technique, and I hold myself to a very high standard. I’m not here to rush through appointments—I’m here to create results that are intentional, elevated, and built to last.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I definitely didn’t build this on my own—this journey has been shaped by the people who believed in me, especially in the early stages.
My mentor and educator, Brensha Searcy of The Ohio Institute of Permanent Makeup, played a foundational role in my growth. She didn’t just teach technique—she created a space where I could learn, ask questions, and build confidence in a completely new industry. That kind of guidance is something I’ll always value.
My husband, Mike, has been my steady support through all of it. He helped bring my studio to life and has been there through the long days, the uncertainty, and every step in between. Having someone who believes in your vision, even when you’re still figuring it out yourself, is everything.
My family also played a huge role, especially during my apprenticeship. They trusted me enough to let me practice, improve, and grow my skills early on—and that trust gave me the confidence to keep going. Their support and reassurance have meant more than I can put into words.
And honestly, my clients are a huge part of this story too. Many of them took a chance on me in the beginning, and that level of trust is something I carry with me in every appointment. Being chosen for something so personal and lasting isn’t something I take lightly.
When I look at where I am now, I don’t just see a business—I see the impact of every person who supported me, believed in me, and gave me the opportunity to grow into it.
